Cullowhee, NC – Wofford's women's basketball team went to Cullowhee to get a win and that's exactly what they did, as they took down the Catamounts 65-58 in a back-and-forth affair. The Terriers move to 8-5 and are settled into 4
th place as of now with one week remaining in the regular season.
Wofford wasted little time to strike as
Da'Ja Green made a three from the wing and
Lawren Cook made two free-throws for an early 5-0 advantage. After four offensive rebounds,
Lilly Hatton was able to get to the line and sink both free-throws to add to the lead. Hatton was found inside again as Booker drew two defenders away from the paint to give her teammate an open shot. Booker wanted some points of her own as she nailed two 3-pointers in consecutive possessions.
Niyah Lutz joined the party as she drilled a trey of her own to give the Terriers a 18-7 lead with 2:47 remaining. Hatton added to her early total as
Alexis Tomlin took on two defenders and passed it off for the open jumper. The 1
st quarter would end with Wofford in front, 21-15.
Niyah Lutz made the first basket for the Terriers in the 2
nd quarter as she spun by her defender and laid it in. Western Carolina would bring the game even at 23 as Wofford called a timeout to regroup.
Alea Harris made a floater out of the timeout to give the team the lead back. After a
Da'Ja Green steal,
Niyah Lutz to it to the rim and made the layup. After an 8-0 run by the Catamounts, Lutz hit her second three of the game to bring the Terriers within three, and the half would end there, 35-32.
Lilly Hatton was able to start it up for Wofford as she received a pass from
Lawren Cook and made the left elbow jumper.
Niyah Lutz was able to tie the score as she hit a corner triple. Cook was able to get the lead when she made a layup from
Cairo Booker. The teams continued to trade leads as Wofford trailed by one, 44-43, at the media timeout. Booker gave the Terriers the lead once again after her 16-foot jumper. Six lead changes by the two squads would result in a 49-49 game going into the 4
th quarter.
Lawren Cook took a
Cairo Booker pass and converted on a 3-point play to start the 4
th quarter.
Lilly Hatton was able to snatch a rebound and make the put-back to put the squad back ahead. Hatton would set a new career-high when she made a deep jumper with the shot clock winding down. She wasn't done there as she dropped a hook shot from the free-throw line to put Wofford up 58-55 with just under five minutes to play.
Niyah Lutz extended the lead with a strong left-handed layup. Wofford would add on to their run as the Catamounts would go quiet, now leading 61-55. With 35 seconds to play, Western Carolina called a timeout as Wofford still controlled the lead.
Da'Ja Green was sent to the line with 25 seconds to go as she stayed calm and collected and made both. The Terriers salted the game away with free-throws as they went on to win 65-58.
Lilly Hatton set a new career-high with 18 points and she also had eight rebounds.
Niyah Lutz had a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds.
Lawren Cook had a career-high 11 rebounds, as the Terriers had 44 total with 19 on the offensive glass.
"This was a huge win for us, not only in the standings, but also for our team. We came together with different players taking on different roles and those players stepping up when they were called on", said coach Garrity. "I'm so proud of the effort we put in tonight and I'm especially proud of the fight and toughness of the team. We are going to enjoy this tonight and be well prepared for Furman next week."
