Baseball Soars With 3-2 Walk-off Win Over Monmouth

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the bottom of the ninth, a single by Hudson Byorick enabled Brett Rodriguez to score the winning run as the Wofford College baseball team defeated Monmouth 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored twice in the third inning, but the Hawks tied things up with runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Wofford left the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings and scored the winning run in the ninth.
 
Wofford is now 7-1 on the season, while Monmouth is 3-4 overall. It was the third walk-off win for the team so far this season. The Terriers had six hits in the game, including three by Brett Rodriguez and two by Hudson Byorick. The Hawks had nine hits, with two each by Johnny Zega, Robbie Holmes and J.P. Welsh.
 
The Hawks were retired in order in the top of the first inning. Brett Rodriguez led off the bottom of the first with a single, but was unable to advance. Monmouth opened the second inning with a single. A pair of strikeouts were followed by the runner being picked off first base to end the top half. Wofford left two runners on base in the bottom of the second after two walks and a fielder's choice.
 
Monmouth led off the third with a single but the runner was stranded at first. Bret Rodriguez opened the bottom of the third with a single and he scored on a double to right center by Hudson Byorick for a 1-0 lead. Byorick stole second and with two outs scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, the Hawks had back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to 2-1. Three straight outs left the runner on second base. Wofford was retired in order to end the fourth inning. Monmouth opened the fifth with a single and the runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A hit by pitch was followed by a fielder's choice to give them runners on the corners. A fly ball ended the scoring chance for the Hawks. Wofford went in order in the bottom of the fifth inning. Back-to-back singles by Monmouth started the sixth inning. With one out, an error allowed a run to score and the game was tied at 2-2. Nolen Hester made a diving catch in center field to end the top half of the inning with runners stranded on the corners.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Alec Cargin walked but was stranded. The Hawks left one on base in the top of the seventh after a single. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Mike Brown reached on an error and Brett Rodriguez walked. Hudson Byorick was hit by a pitch to load the bases but a ground out ended the inning.
 
Monmouth had two outs in the top of the eighth when they had a double to right field. A ground out ended the top half. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Cameron Gill had his first career hit. Nolen Hester and Andrew Orzel followed with walks to load the bases. A fielder's choice by Shane Lussier resulted in Gill being out at home for the second out. Mike Brown put down a bunt to the third base line but was out at first to end the scoring opportunity.
 
The Hawks went in order in the top of the ninth. Brett Rodriguez doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Terriers. Hudson Byorick singled to left field and Rodriguez was able to score on a fielding error to give Wofford the 3-2 walk-off victory.
 
Wofford starter Jake Hershman went four innings with one run allowed on four hits. He tied a career high with seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk. Dalton Rhadans threw 2.2 innings with one run allowed on four hits and one strikeout. Rasesh Pandya (2-0) earned the win by going the final 2.1 innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
 
Trey Dombroski started for Monmouth and went six innings with two runs allowed on three hits, while striking out nine batters. Nick Houghton threw 1.1 innings with one hit allowed and one strikeout. Ryan Bearse (0-1) gave up one unearned run on two hits in the final two-thirds of an inning.
 
Wofford will make the first road trip of the season on Tuesday, February 25, as the team goes to USC Upstate. Next weekend the Terriers will host Merrimack for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
