Men's golf places sixth at Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Wofford men's golf team had a strong second tournament of its spring season, placing sixth at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. Individually, Walker Simas and Matthew Copeland both tied for 11th place overall, while Ryan Marter tied for 17th place.

"Solid week by our guys," Wofford head coach Alex Hamilton said. "Lots of positive with three players in the top 20."

The Terriers opened up with a round-one 297 before firing a second-round 288 on Monday, totaling 306 as a team in the third and final round on Tuesday.

"We were within a few holes of a third-place finish and still had a chance to win with six or seven holes left," Hamilton said.

Simas, a senior, fired a 4-over-par 76 in round one, but responded with a season-best 6-under-par 66 in round two to help the Terriers total the fourth-lowest team round in a field of 18 teams. Simas' round two featured six birdies and zero bogeys. On Monday, Simas totaled a 79 to finish with a 5-over-par 221 for the tournament.

Like Simas, Copeland's best round was his second, shooting a 2-over-par 74 in the first round, but bouncing back with a 1-under-par 71 in round two, birdieing holes No. 5, No. 6 and No. 8. On Monday, the sophomore carded a 4-over-par 76 with a pair of birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 to tie for 11th place.

Marter was just one stroke behind Simas and Copeland, totaling a 6-over-par 222 for the tournament. Marter came out of the gates swinging, shooting even par with birdies on hole No. 8 and No. 18. After a second-round 76, the junior finished round three with a 2-over-par 74, birdieing hole No. 6, No. 8 and No. 15.

Henry Augenstein rounded out the scoring for Wofford, shooting a pair of 75's before a round-three 77 tied him for 39th place overall.

"Proud of the growth we have seen and I'm looking forward to seeing the semester play out."

The team will have a little time off, returning to the course on March 9 to open up play at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
