Women’s lacrosse battles American

Terriers fall in overtime

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's lacrosse team hosted American University on Saturday, falling to the Eagles 20-19 in overtime at Gibbs Stadium.

Elisabeth Ralph led the Wofford offense, scoring five goals while Emma Gentile and Ally Furnari each recorded a hat trick. Shannon Wulff scored two goals and dished out two assists with freshman Aislinn Washburn recording 11 saves. As a team, 29 Wofford's 37 shots were on frame, winning 22 draw controls to American's 19, picking up 12 ground balls in the process.

American got on the board first, but Ralph tied the game at 1-1 as the two sides traded goals with Furnari knotting it up at 5-5. The Eagles would go on a 4-0 run, before Gentile ended the scoring drought with her sixth goal of the season. Abe and Krasinski would find the back of the net as Wofford cut the deficit to one, but American scored two to go into the break ahead 11-8.

The Eagles opened the second with five straight goals before Leah Hurley scored her sixth goal of the season to make the score 15-9. The Terriers mounted a rally, scoring four in a row to make the score 16-13 in favor of American with just under 12 minutes to play. American answered with a goal of their own before Ralph drilled home three shots to make the score 17-16 with under nine minutes remaining. 

With 6:02 to play, Wulff worked her way in front of the net and buried an opportunity as the Terriers tied the game at 17-17. At the 3:39 mark, Kendall Goldblum would put the Eagles back in front with Furnari answering less than a minute later. With just over a minute to play, it was Krasinski who delivered putting Wofford ahead 19-18, but Goldblum equalized with 41 seconds remaining.

Neither team would convert again as the sides went to overtime, where Casey Harkins would send the Eagles home victorious.

Wofford now drops to 0-6 on the season and will cap off its five-game home stand on Monday, March 16 when it hosts Presbyterian at 5 p.m.
