Where Are They Now? Benjamin Foster

Benjamin Foster '02 was a three-year letterman at Wofford and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a degree in biology. In addition, he served as student body president. Among his many accolades, he was Academic All-District and recipient of the SoCon Dave Hart Postgraduate Scholarship. On the field he ran for 426 yards on 91 carries with two touchdowns. A native of Kennesaw, Georgia, he currently resides in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Laurie Foster, and their sons Jacob Alexander “JAX”, Thomas “Tommy”, Timothy “Timmy” , and Benjamin “Benji”

How did you decide to attend Wofford?

Wofford was one of five schools I visited during the recruiting process.  I also took official visits to The United States Military Academy (West Point), Air Force Academy, Furman University, and Cornell. I had an amazing time during my Wofford visit, was really impressed with the pre-Med / biology track record, and knew the proximity to Atlanta (my hometown) would give my family the opportunity to attend most of my games.

What is your favorite Wofford football memory?

My favorite Wofford memory is playing in Death Valley at Clemson University on September 8th, 2001.  We were up 14 to 7 in the 2nd quarter.

At Wofford, student-athletes must compete on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.  I know my experience as a student-athlete makes me a better executive today.

What is your favorite Wofford memory?

My favorite Wofford memory is being elected Student Body President.  I felt honored that my Wofford classmates believed I had the leadership capabilities to represent them.  It was a tremendous experience and one that helped shape my professional career.

My 2nd favorite Wofford memory is my entire January interim course in South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.  My Wofford interim course was the first time I traveled outside the United States.  I was one of only two African American students on the trip, and a Wofford Board of Trustee member provided a scholarship that funded my interim trip.  I am forever grateful for the kindness and love shown to me at such an early age.

Do you have a favorite Wofford professor or mentor that impacted you?

Dr. Ellen Goldey (currently VP for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at Centre College). Dr. Goldey was my biology academic adviser and she was one of the professors that facilitated the January interim project to South Africa in 2001. Dr. Goldey is and will always be my family!

How did competing as a student-athlete prepare you for life after Wofford?

Competing as a student-athlete enhanced my time management skillset, strengthened my resilience, and polished my leadership traits.  At Wofford, student-athletes must compete on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.  I know my experience as a student-athlete makes me a better executive today.
