Wofford Women's Soccer Can't Overcome Miscues, Falls to ETSU 1-0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team lost 1-0 to the ETSU Buccaneers at Snyder Field on Friday night. Though the Terriers kept it close and had plenty of chances on the attack, they could not break through the Buccaneer defense. The Terrier defense held strong as well, but a costly yellow card on
Olivia Hughes allowed Lindsey Cook to find the net via a free kick in the 77
th minute to give ETSU the victory.
Megan Childress got off the match's first shot rather quickly in the 2
nd minute, but she missed left. It would be 13 minutes before ETSU would respond with their first shot, also out left. The squads were playing tough defense, neither allowing the other much opportunity on the attack. ETSU shot again in 25
th minute but was blocked. Wofford responded with two shots in the 26
th minute, but neither could connect. ETSU's Raffaella Giuliano was booked for a yellow card in the 29
th minute, setting up Wofford's best chance of the match to that point.
Mia Bookhard put on back-to-back shot attempts off the ensuing free kick, but neither were successful. She tried again in the 35
th minute, but Shu Ohba made the save. ETSU would miss on a shot in the 37
th minute. Just when it seemed a scoreless first half was inevitable,
Meghan Waninger was called for a foul in the box, setting up an ETSU penalty kick.
Maria Mon chose to dive left, leaving the net wide open for ETSU to secure the lead before half, but Lindsey Cook rocketed her shot off the crossbar, and the teams entered the break scoreless.
The half opened with both sides quickly trying to break through.
Lexi Reichenbach missed high in the 47
th minute. The Bucs hit the crossbar and missed wide in the 55
th and 57
th minutes, respectively. The received another chance in the 65
th minute, but
Maria Mon made the save. The Buccaneers' attack continued to pressure the Terriers with more shots in the 70
th and 74
th minutes, though neither connected. It was with 76:03 on the clock that
Olivia Hughes was booked for a yellow card, setting up an ETSU free kick. Lindsey Cook took her running start and whipped the ball into the top left corner to break the tie at last. Wofford then went on the attack to try to comeback.
Megan Childress took a shot in the 80
th minute, but it was saved. The Buccaneer defense held tight from there, and the desperation comeback attempt fell short.
Wofford (3-8-0, 1-1-0) posted nine shots while ETSU (4-2-3, 1-1-1) put on 11. The Bucs also held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
Maria Mon (2-4-0) tallied three saves in goal for the Terriers. Shu Ohba (4-2-3) also accrued three saves for the Buccaneers to secure a clean sheet.
The Terriers will be in action at Snyder Field again on Sunday, October 3 when they play host to SoCon foe Western Carolina at 1:00 pm.
