SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team played their final home match of the 2021 season Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field, shutting out the VMI Keydets 3-0.
Leanna Guion put the Terriers on the board when she slotted one home in the 42
nd minute.
Mia Bookhard curved a longshot home in the 47
th minute to extend Wofford's lead. Senior
Savannah Vathy slotted home the third and final goal for the Terriers from short range in the 78
th minute to seal the shutout win.
"This particular [senior] group has meant a lot to out program, so to get them a win is really awesome," said head coach
Emily Grant. "And to have a senior score on Senior Day is also great. It's a really good boost, and we've never had two wins in a weekend since I've been here, so that's another added boost in confidence."
VMI started the game in control of the possession, putting on the game's first four shots within the opening 27 minutes. The Wofford attack finally picked up some steam in the 28
th minute when
Katie Gilligan fired off the first shot for the Terriers, missing high. The Keydets missed wide a couple more times, and
Leanna Guion put a shot on net that was saved in the 39
th minute. From there, Wofford picked up the momentum with
McKenzie Guest trying to slot one to the right corner in the 40
th minute that was saved.
Leanna Guion got another chance in the 42
nd minute, and this one connected.
Meara Kelly's pass found Guion in the box, and she slotted it home across the box into the bottom right corner to score her first goal of the season and put the Terriers in front before halftime.
The Terriers did not need long out of the break to extend their lead.
McKenzie Guest found
Mia Bookhard streaking across the field in the 47
th minute, and as she reached the edge of the box she unleashed a curving shot that found the net through the top left corner. The Terriers remained on the attack, with unsuccessful shots by
Rachel Rasins and
Alexis Mapplebeck. Seniors
Caroline Thompson and
Karen Majewski attempted to net Senior Day goals in the 70
th and 72
nd minutes, respectively, but neither could connect. It would be the senior
Savannah Vathy who netted a goal for the outgoing class on their special day in the 78
th minute.
Sophia Hayag found the wide-open Vathy streaking down the field, and she entered the box to face the Keydet keeper one-on-one. With the goalie diving right, Vathy went left to slide the ball into the net through the outstretched keeper's legs, giving the Terriers the 3-0 advantage. VMI gave one final shot attempt in the 85
th minute that sailed wide, securing the clean sheet for the Terriers.
Wofford (5-11-0, 3-4-0) had 12 shots, nine on goal, while VMI (3-12-1, 0-5-1) only posted seven shots, just one on goal. The Terriers also held the corner kick advantage, 5-1. Senior
Maria Mon (3-5-0) secured one save and her first shutout of the year for the Terriers. Jillian Hall (2-11-1) picked up six saves in net for the Keydets.
Wofford will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 22 at The Citadel. Kickoff against the Bulldogs will be at 2:00 pm.
