CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team utilized a late comeback to salvage a point against The Citadel on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs struck first when Maggie Melogy scored in the 50
th minute. With their backs against the wall, the Terriers secured the equalized in the 88
th minute, courtesy of
Savannah Vathy. Neither squad could net a golden goal, settling for the draw.
Though the match got off to a quiet start, The Citadel had an excellent chance in the 7
th minute to get on the board.
Caroline Doss saved the shot, but the ball ricocheted away, giving the Bulldogs an open opportunity at the net. However, the rebound shot was also saved and then bounced off the post and away.
Addie Marlett posted Wofford's first shot in the 12
th minute, but she missed wide.
Mia Bookhard attempted to chip the keeper in the 23
rd minute, but the ball went over the net. The Bulldogs went back on the attack, shooting in the 25
th minute but missing left. A minute later The Citadel rocketed a shot from the edge of the box, but
Caroline Doss knocked it away, and the rebound shot sailed high. The Bulldogs had an opportunity at the near post in the 28
th minute and the far post a minute later, but Doss came through with saves on both. The Terriers attempted get on the board again in the 38
th minute, but the Bulldogs played a stifling defense, preventing
Meara Kelly from getting off a clean shot and blocking her attempt. In the final minute of the half it appeared as if Wofford would finally break through when
Ashley Grant's shot was saved and bounced to
Lexi Reichenbach. With the keeper on the ground, she shot at the open net, but a Bulldog defender managed to jump in the way for the save, sending the squads to halftime scoreless.
Katie Gilligan opened the second half with a wide longshot for Wofford in the 47
th minute. The Citadel would strike first in the 50
th minute, however, when Maggie Melogy slotted the ball into the lower left corner to put the Bulldogs on top.
Rachel Rasins took the task of pulling level upon herself, responding in the 58
th minute with a saved shot. Rasins had another chance in the 59
th minute when the keeper came out to meet her, and Rasins made a nice move to get around her, but the shot banged off the post. A yellow card on The Citadel gave
Rachel Rasins another attempt in the 63
rd minute, but her jumping shot was saved. The Citadel halted Wofford's momentum with a shot of their own in the 64
th minute, but
Caroline Doss secured the save.
Rachel Rasins got back on it in the 76
th minute, making a move past a defender to cut across the field, but her left-footed shot sailed wide. The Citadel had a chance at an insurance goal in the 84
th minute after a yellow card set up a free kick, but the shot was wide. With time winding down, Wofford finally netted the equalizer when
Savannah Vathy found the top left corner of the goal in the 88
th minute. Vathy tried for a brace in the 90
th minute for the lead, but her shot was wide, sending the game to overtime.
The first overtime period was relatively silent. The Bulldogs opened the extra frame by breaking through the defense and putting on a shot in the 93
rd minute, but it was saved. The Bulldogs took a longshot in the 98
th minute, but it was again saved, forcing 10 more minutes of play. Neither team could get off a shot in the final frame, however, and the sides finished with a 1-1 draw.
Wofford (5-11-1, 3-4-1) posted 15 shots while The Citadel (9-5-2, 3-3-2) put on 13. The Bulldogs held a slight advantage in corners, 6-5.
Caroline Doss secured eight saves in net for the Terriers. Jess Newton started in goal for the Bulldogs, playing the first 102 minutes with three saves. Maddie Somogyi played the last eight minutes with no saves for The Citadel.
The Terriers conclude the regular season on Sunday when they travel to Macon, Ga. to face Mercer. Kickoff against the Bears will be at 2:00 pm.
