Cedric Otten (-4) led the Terriers tied for seventh for a career-low finish, as the Wofford men's golf team finished its fall slate of competition on a high note in fourth out of 15 teams at the Grandover Collegiate, hosted by UNCG, at the par-72, 7,270-yard Grandover East Course. Additionally, sophomore
Harry Jones (+1) and junior
Matthew Larkin (+2) recorded top-20 finishes to help pace Wofford to its best finish this fall.
Otten opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 in Saturday's first round prior to blazing seven birdies throughout the second round to finish with a 4-under 68. The Dusseldorf, Germany native then used an even back-nine performance in the final round, including birdies on the final two holes, to record a 73 for a total of 212 and record his first career top-10 finish as a Terrier.
Otten led the entire 101-player field in par-3 scoring at 4-under, with a 2.67 stroke average on par-3s, while also leading Wofford with a team-high 13 birdies.
Otten's 4-under-par performance marks a career-best par-72 tournament score, as the sophomore recorded a 211 earlier this season in the JT Poston Invitational at the par-71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Harry Jones also opened the tournament strong, using a 3-under front-nine performance to record a 3-under 69 in the first, followed by finishing even (72) in the second round with five birdies. Jones would be partially set back with a 76 in Sunday's final round, though, his 1-over total of 217 still granted him a top-20 finish, tied for 15
th.
Matthew Larkin added a top-20 finish to his fall slate, tied for 20
th, after using six birdies in the first round en route to a 1-under 71 and even 72 in the second round. Larkin then finished with a 75 in the final round to record a total of 218.
Wofford (E) finished even for the tournament with a total of 864 – its best par-72 score achieved this fall – as Davidson (-16) won the tournament by seven strokes over Toledo (-9). No. 45-ranked Nick Lyerly (-14) of UNCG was the tournament's low medalist.
The Terriers scored wins over Elon (+1), East Carolina (+4), Mercer (+9), VCU (+12), Appalachian State (+13), Samford (+21), Charleston Southern (+24), Richmond (+37), George Washington (+45), Bellarmine (+53) and North Carolina A&T (+79).
Freshman
Carl Hellat (+6) finished tied for 37
th with a total of 222 in his first appearance in the Terriers' lineup, as junior
Jackson Hill (+7) finished tied for 45
th with a score of 223.
Wofford fielded three individuals over the weekend as well in
Drew Harrill (+15, T69),
Bailey Means (+15, T69) and
Daniel Brasington (+20, T84).
Harry Jones led the Terriers with a 71.53 average through 15 rounds this fall, followed by
Matthew Larkin with a 71.83 average through 12 rounds.
Cedric Otten finished with a 72.53 average through 15 rounds, while
Jackson Hill (74.00 avg., 15 rounds) and
Daniel Brasington (75.67 avg., 12 rounds) round out Wofford's top five scorers for the 2021-22 fall season.
The Terriers will return back to action for the spring 2022 season on Feb. 11-14 when Wofford travels to Palm Beach, Fla. to compete in the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate, hosted by UNCG.
