CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford women's soccer team was eliminated from the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship with a loss in a penalty kick shootout to the Chattanooga Mocs Tuesday night.
Abigail McKenzie helped the Terriers strike first with her goal in the 48
th minute. However, the Mocs found a clutch equalizer in the 89
th minute to force overtime. With neither side able to net a golden goal, the squads entered a shootout, in which the Mocs secured the victory by outscoring the Terriers 5-3.
Wofford opened the match in control of the possession, firing the first shot three minutes in, which was saved.
Caileen Almeida tried to go for the top right corner in the 7
th minute, but it was saved as well. Chattanooga's first shot came 11 minutes in and missed high. The squads traded shots again before the Mocs went on the offensive, shooting three times in the 33
rd minute, though nothing connected. Chattanooga had two more chances in the 37
th and 38
th minutes, but they were saved and wide, respectively. The Mocs had one more look in the 43
rd minute, but
Caroline Doss made the save to preserve the scoreless first half.
Wofford came out of the break on the offensive with
Rachel Rasins missing wide on a shot in the 47
th minute. It was
Abigail McKenzie who would deliver the goal for the Terriers when she slotted it home in the bottom right corner in the 48
th minute.
Alexis Mapplebeck picked up an assist for crossing the ball in to McKenzie off a corner kick. Chattanooga fired off the next three shots, all unsuccessful.
Savannah Vathy had two chances in the 67
th and 69
th minutes, but both shots missed. The Mocs responded with shots in the 72
nd and 75
th minutes, but neither connected.
Savannah Vathy saw another opportunity in the 77
th minute, but her attempt was blocked. With time winding down, the Mocs entered desperation mode. Chattanooga shot in the 82
nd minute, missing left. Just when it seemed that Wofford had claimed the victory, Maggie Shaw found the equalizer in the 89
th minute. Mackenzie Smith delivered the assist to Shaw, who slotted it into the lower right corner to force overtime.
The first extra frame was mostly quiet, but Mackenzie Smith had opportunities late, firing shots in the 99
th and 100
th minutes, but both were blocked by well-placed Terrier defenders. Smith also sent the first shot of the second overtime, missing wide in the 105
th minute. The Mocs saw one final opportunity in the 110
th minute, but the freshly subbed-on
Maria Mon made the save to force a penalty shootout.

Caileen Almeida was up first for Wofford, evening the score when she found the net to the lower left corner. The Mocs responded with another make to the right.
Leanna Guion came up next for the Terriers, but her shot missed wide to the left. The Mocs seized the opportunity to extend their lead, finding the net again.
Rachel Rasins was the third-straight Terrier to go left in the shootout, and she was successful in putting it home in the upper corner. However, the Mocs converted their next shot to take a 4-2 lead in the shootout. Needing to convert to keep Wofford alive,
Alexis Mapplebeck continued the trend of Terriers shooting left, slotting it home to the lower left corner. However, Grace Klippenstein found the upper left corner for the Mocs, securing the victory in penalty kicks for Chattanooga.
Wofford (5-12-2, 3-5-1) had nine shots in the match as opposed to the 22 from Chattanooga (6-10-3, 3-5-1). The Mocs also led with five corners against three for the Terriers.
Caroline Doss started in net for the Terriers, playing the first 108 minutes with four saves.
Maria Mon relieved her at the end of the second overtime, securing one save in her two minutes of action while also handling the penalty kick shootout. Abbey Sadler secured four saves in goal for the Mocs.
