Women's Golf Wins French Broad Collegiate Invitational to Close Fall

Wofford picked up its first 54-hole tournament win since 2012

Wofford bested 12 teams to win the tournament's crown on Wednesday.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford women's golf team finished its fall competition on a strong note on Wednesday afternoon at the par-71, 5,937-yard Cliffs at Walnut Cove in Asheville, N.C., recording its first 54-hole tournament win since 2012 at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational, hosted by UNC Asheville, with a total score of 896. Senior Becca Earl led the Terriers tied for third in her best finish of the fall, while freshman Maggie Jackson (+12) and junior Nicole Amos added top-15 finishes to help pace Wofford to the victory.

"I'm so proud of these ladies! Sitting atop the leaderboard to start the final round is difficult," said head coach Angie Ridgeway of the team's focus entering Wednesday's final round. "It's been a while since we've been there, so coming away with a win is very rewarding. This team works hard and is very deserving of the win."

The win marks the first 54-hole victory since winning the SCSU Bulldog Invitational on Oct. 2, 2012.

Earl, who led the field in par-3s (-1) and par-5s (-3) over the three-day span, recorded a 76 in Monday's first round and finished strong with a pair of birdies on No. 16 and No. 17 in Tuesday's second round to post a 2-over-73. Earl then used a determined 2-under back-nine performance in Wednesday's final round, recording birdies on No. 15 and No. 17 to hold on to Wofford's two-stroke lead with a score of 220 and secure the team victory.

Earl led Wofford with 10 birdies, also good for third-best among the 70-player field, and tallied 33 pars for the tournament.

The Terriers sat in first heading into Wednesday's final round, as Wofford (+44) edged out Eastern Kentucky (+46) by two strokes to secure the win, followed by High Point (+58), Gardner-Webb (+58) and Western Carolina (+58) all tying for third. Eastern Kentucky's Ragga Kristinsdottier (+5) was tabbed the individual medalist, as Earl finished in a three-way tie for third just two strokes behind.

The Terriers also scored wins over USC Upstate (+59), Longwood (+106), Belmont (+106), Radford (+140), Appalachian State (+141) and Northern Kentucky (+144).

Freshman Maggie Jackson (+12) finished the fall on a high note, reaching a career-best finish, tied for 11th, while adding her second career top-20 finish. Jackson steadily improved day-by-day, opening with a 76 in the first round before using two birdies in the second round to register a 75 on Tuesday. Jackson, who led Wofford with 34 pars for the tournament, then played steady over Wednesday's final round, finishing with a 3-over 74 to secure her personal-best finish with a score of 225.

Junior Nicole Amos (+13) added her best finish and second top-20 placement of the fall, tied for 13th, opening with a 3-over 74, with three birdies, in Monday's first round, followed by a 78 in the second round. Amos then added three more birdies in Wednesday's final round to record a 74 and finish with a total of 226.
