Mack Posts Career Night, Wofford Rallies for 77-60 Win Over Hampton

Mack registers career-high double-double, Terriers use 24-5 second-half run to pull away

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior forward B.J. Mack posted a career-night on the opening night of action at the Terrier Classic, held at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, recording career-highs of 18 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to notch his first career double-double and lead all four double-figure scorers for Wofford en route to a 77-60 victory over Hampton (2-2) on Friday night. The Terriers held the Pirates scoreless from the field for the final 8:27 of the contest while using an insurmountable 24-5 run to rally for the 17-point victory.

"I was proud of how they responded. Seemed like for a long stretch, they were making everything," said head coach Jay McAuley of the Pirates. "We were a little worming up to contesting and that's not how you get stops and make guys miss. But was really proud of our young bunch regrouping and responding and recommitting to getting active in our gaps on the catch."

"You control the glass and you control that free-throw line score and you're going to be in a lot of good situations and I thought our guys did a good job," added McAuley of Wofford's plus-12 rebound advantage (38-26) and 80 percent from the line. "There were a lot of fouls that could've gone either way and we could've got there more in my opinion … Our guys stepped up and made the plays we needed to. I thought did a good job staying in front, frustrating them a little bit, and we were able to get some guys in situations they've never been in before. It was a good night for us."

During Wofford's 24-5 scoring run, the Terriers held Hampton 0-for-10 from the field, including 0-of-5 from 3-point range. The Pirates' final five points of the contest came off a 5-for-9 outing at the line (55.6%) from the 8:27 mark on to finish the game.

Mack led with game-highs, hitting 6-of-12 from the field (50%) and 2-of-5 from 3-point range (40%) en route to his career-high numbers. The Charlotte, N.C., native was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, in addition to dishing a career-best six assists in flirting with a triple-double.

Sophomore Max Klesmit finished with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including four threes (4-for-8) - three of which came in the first half - and three rebounds, followed by junior forward Messiah Jones with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Ryan Larson rounds out Wofford's double-figure performers with 10 points, including 6-of-8 from the line (75%), and four rebounds and assists apiece.

Sophomore Sam Godwin added seven points and a season-high eight rebounds, as Austin Patterson recorded six points on 2-of-5 (40%) shooting from deep.

Wofford connected on 15-of-31 in the first half (48.4%), while shooting 35.3 percent from deep on 6-of-17 shooting to hold a 38-32 edge through the first half.

Up 49-41 after a Messiah Jones layup, the Pirates would erupt for a 9-0 run to claim the lead (50-49) and hold a 55-53 edge by the 8:27 mark of the second half.

From there, the Terriers would lock in defensively, using consecutive stops to fuel the relentless second-half run, starting with Mack free throws at the line and an Isaiah Bigelow fast break finish to reclaim the lead, 57-55. Leading 61-57 after Mack and Godwin free throws, Ryan Larson would dime Mack for a 3-pointer from the top of the key, while Messiah Jones muscled a layup in the paint from Mack to build a nine-point cushion at the under-4 media timeout, 66-57.

Hampton would put the Terriers in the double bonus with 3:23 remaining, seeing the Terriers hit 18-of-20 from the line in the second half (90%), as Larson and Klesmit free throws pushed a 13-point margin at 70-57. The Pirates continued to foul Wofford for the duration of the half, as Larson would record five points on a layup and three free throws to calmly put the Terriers up 15 with 1:38 left, 75-60. B.J. Mack would then put the finishing touches on the victory, corralling a crucial offensive rebound to retain possession off a Klesmit three with under a minute left, as the junior finessed his way to the rim for his 18th bucket of the night to ultimately seal the deal for the 77-60 win at the end of regulation.

Hampton had four finish in double figures, led by Russell Dean and Rio Haskett with 15 points each, followed by DeAngelo Epps (11) and Najee Garvin (10).

The Pirates finished the contest 32.8 percent from the field (20-of-61) and 30.4 percent beyond the arc (7-for-23), as Wofford held Hampton to just 9-of-29 in the second half (31%) and 1-of-10 from 3-point range (10%).

The Terriers continue to dominate the paint, outscoring the Pirates with a 30-16 margin for the contest while seeing 13 second-chance points, to Hampton's 10, on eight offensive rebounds – including four from Sam Godwin throughout the night.

Wofford (3-1) prepares for former SoCon foe Georgia Southern next, hosting the Eagles in the final match of the Terrier Classic on Sunday, Nov. 21. Tip-off is slated for a 5 p.m. start on ESPN+ at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
