Baseball Rallies For 11-10 Win At Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning on the way to an 11-10 win over Gardner-Webb at John Henry Moss Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After Wofford tied the game in the top of the eighth inning, the Runnin' Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the eighth for a 10-8 lead. The Terriers rallied in the top of the ninth and then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for the win.  
 
Wofford is 1-1 to begin the season and Gardner-Webb is 1-1. Colin Davis had three hits and a pair of RBIs, while Shane Lussier was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Jack Renwick added two hits and two RBIs. The Wofford pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts. Gardner-Webb had 16 hits in the contest.
 
The Terriers began the game with a walk by Trey Yunger and Lawson Hill reaching on an error, followed by a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Yunger scored on a wild pitch and a triple by Colin Davis scored Hill for a 2-0 lead. Nolen Hester added an RBI single for a 3-0 score in the middle of the first. Gardner-Webb answered with one run in the bottom of the first and had the bases loaded when a double play ended the inning.
 
Wofford left two runners on base in the top of the second inning and the Terriers turned a double play in the bottom of the frame. Colin Davis led off the third inning with a double and he moved to third on a fly ball. A sacrifice fly by Zeb Roos drove in Davis for a 4-1 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs had a pair of doubles and then a throwing error allowed both runs to score to cut the lead to 4-3. Wofford stranded two runners in the top of the fourth inning. Gardner-Webb had three singles that resulted in one run to make it a 4-4 game through four frames.
 
Colin Davis led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run. Zeb Roos had a single with one out and Matty Brown walked. After a couple of stolen bases, Roos scored on a throwing error and Brown scored on a wild pitch for a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Gardner-Webb had one runner on base with two outs when back-to-back singles added one run and then a three-run homer pushed the lead to 8-7.
 
In the sixth inning, Wofford left one runner on base and Gardner-Webb stranded two. The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the seventh and the Runnin' Bulldogs had a lead-off double but were unable to advance the runner.
 
With one out in the top of the eighth, Shane Lussier singled and stole second base. Jack Renwick had a double for his first career hit and drove in Lussier to tie the game at 8-8. Lawson Hill walked and Colin Davis was intentionally walked to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the scoring opportunity.
 
Gardner-Webb led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and with one out a hit by pitch and walk loaded the bases. A combination of a fielder's choice and throwing error plated a run, while a ground out allowed a second run to score for a 10-8 advantage. In the top of the ninth, Matty Brown singled with one out and Shane Lussier walked with two outs. They both advanced on stolen bases and a single by Jack Renwick along with a throwing error tied the game at 10-10. A double by Lawson Hill scored Renwick to give Wofford an 11-10 advantage. Clay Schwaner struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn the victory.
 
Wofford's Josh Vitus worked 4.2 innings with seven runs allowed on ten hits and four strikeouts. Matthew Marchal threw 2.2 innings with two runs allowed and four strikeouts. Clay Schwaner earned the win by going the final 1.2 innings with one unearned run allowed and three strikeouts.
 
Isaac Campbell started for Gardner-Webb and went 4.1 innings with five runs allowed and three strikeouts. Sebastian Boivin gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Lenny Washington worked 2.1 innings with one run allowed. Tyler Harrison issued one walk. Kyle Skidmore went two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts. Langdon Wilson (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits in the final frame.
 
Wofford will return for the home opener at Russell C. King Field at 3:00 p.m. Sunday against the Runnin' Bulldogs to complete the three-game series.
