SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford's women's tennis team played their second match in two days on Saturday afternoon, coming away with another late victory as they defeated the Mountaineers 4-3. This was the team's first win against Appalachian State since 2007-08 when the Mountaineers were back in the SoCon.
Doubles play didn't start the way the Terriers had hoped, falling 2-6 at the #2 position, but the duo of
Jenna Vroman and
Lilie Steryous tied the scoring with a 6-3 win on court #1. The pairing of
Kay Kluska and
Brittney Wilbur fought as hard as they could, but were eventually taken down as Appalachian State took the point.
The Mountaineers made it a 2-0 score line before Kluska got her win on court #6, defeating Sandra Anglesjo by a 6-4, 6-3 score. The Terriers tied the match 2 apiece after
Georgia Fischer picked up a 7-6, 6-2 win at the #4 position. With Appalachian State taking a 3-2 lead after a win on court #5, it came down to the final two matches just like Friday.
Liz Massie powered her way to a three-set win, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 to tie the match 3-3. Steryous was last to go as she also ended up going to a third set. Down 3-2 early on, she came all the way back to win her game, and the match, with a 6-4 win to give Wofford the match.
"Another incredible match today…I think we [Wofford and Appalachian State] both pushed each other to our limits today", said coach Hall. "It's tough to play back-to-back, but I'm so happy how we responded after doubles and the competitiveness throughout singles."
