McDavid Surpasses 1,000 Points, Hatton Career-High not Enough in 2OT Loss

MACON, GA – Wofford's women's basketball team ended up playing in their second double-overtime game of the season, the first time playing multiple overtime games in a season since 2009-10. Unfortunately, the Terriers were stifled in the second overtime and ended up losing 83-74.

Wofford remains in 4th place in the SoCon standings with a 7-6 record (11-9), while Mercer inches closer to first at 9-2 (15-5).

Jamari McDavid opened up the scoring with a jumper from Niyah Lutz, then she was able to make a layup for a quick 4-4 game. Lilly Hatton got her first two with a layup with another assists coming from Lutz. Hatton then rattled off five straight, Alea Harris providing the assists this time. Alexis Tomlin and Helen Matthews both made buckets late as Wofford trailed by one, 15-16 at the end of the 1st.

Both teams came out trading baskets early on before McDavid knocked down a pair of shots to give Wofford a 25-22 advantage. Hatton was just shy of double figure in the first half after she made another layup, but Mercer took the lead late in the half. Harris put up a nice pull-up jumper from the right elbow with 30 seconds to go as it was 32-29 in favor of Mercer at the intermission.

The Bears started the 2nd half going up five, but Lutz answered right away to keep it a one-possession game. The duo of Hatton and McDavid were dominating the paint as the two combined for six points to give Wofford the lead again. Hatton drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to match her career-best with 17 to this point, and Matthews scored at the buzzer for a 47-44 edge in favor of Wofford.

Tomlin broke the lead out to four a minute into the 4th quarter, but Mercer went on a 12-0 run over a four minute stretch to give them an eight point lead. Wofford wasn't ready to give in as contributions from Lutz, Carman, and Hatton brought it right back to a two point game. Hatton then tied the game 59-59 before McDavid would sink a layup giving her 1,000 points for her career. McDavid added a free-throw with under 20 seconds left, but Mercer tied it with a three as the teams were headed to overtime.

Both teams struggled to find momentum to begin overtime as two Wofford blocks kept the Bears off the board. Mercer struck first, but Hatton answered immediately to knot it up again. Free-throws were all the Terriers were able to score in overtime, but that was good enough for a three point lead with under 10 seconds to go. The team in orange however hit a trey with two seconds left to take it to double overtime.

Mercer found their groove early on as Wofford looked to be getting tired. An 8-1 run by the Bears gave them a seven point lead midway through the extra frame. The Terriers were unable to mount a comeback in the final two minutes as a passionate game between both sides came to an end.

Lilly Hatton put up a career-high 26 points on 11-19 shooting while also matching her career-best of four blocks. Jamari McDavid broke the 1,000 point milestone and ended with 18. Both Hatton and McDavid shared a team-best eight rebounds. Helen Matthews also found herself in double figures with 10, and Alea Harris had a team-high five assists.

"That was a long, draining game. I give Mercer credit though, they never gave up and hit big shots to take the game to both overtimes", said coach Garrity. "We did a good job getting the ball in the paint and converting when we got there. They [Mercer] did well running the court and I think that hurt us a little bit down the stretch. This one hurts, but we will regroup and prepare for Furman."

Wofford will end its regular season with a trip to Greenville to take on Furman. The Terriers and Paladins are set to play Thursday, February 25 at 7:00 pm.
