GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team wrapped up regular season play Thursday night inside Timmons Arena with a 58-52 loss to the Furman Paladins.
Wofford finishes the regular season with a 7-7 record which slots them 4
th in the SoCon, their best finish in program history. The 11-10 overall record also gives them their third straight season having a .500 record or above, the first time at the Division I level.
It was a very slow moving 1
st quarter with neither team scoring in the opening four minutes. Furman got on the board first and went on a 7-0 run before Wofford called a timeout. The Terriers didn't find much more luck out of the timeout, as
Helen Matthews got the only basket of the quarter, as the Paladins lead 16-2 at the end of the 1
st.
Wofford was off to a better start in the 2
nd quarter as
Alea Harris played tough defense and came away with a steal-and-score.
Jackie Carman knocked down a three moments later, and offensive rebounds allowed
Niyah Lutz to get a layup. Hatton knocked down a jumper from Harris as the Terriers crept back into it, 21-14 at the media timeout. Matthews' two free-throws late in the half were the last points for Wofford, trailing 27-17 at halftime.
Jamari McDavid opened the 2
nd half with an offensive rebound and put-back, but Furman came back with an 11-0 run to put them ahead 42-21. The Terriers were able to get the Paladins in foul trouble and converted four straight at the line.
Annabelle Schultz came off the bench and forced a turnover which gave
Alexis Tomlin an open layup. Schultz then drained two 3-pointers with Matthews adding the third, giving the team a 10-0. The lead was cut to single digits as the 3
rd quarter ended 44-36.
The 4th quarter began with Carman hitting a free-throw. Hatton and McDavid added to the early scoring, each grabbing an offensive rebound and finishing, which made the score 50-43 with 4:32 left. Matthews took a strong layup to the right side and Schultz connected again from deep which made it a four-point game. Wofford held Furman scoreless for three minutes, but they had to foul as time was running out. Matthews made another layup for a one-possession game, but Furman was able to get to the line and score and end out the game.
Annabelle Schultz and
Helen Matthews both came off the bench to lead the Terriers in scoring with 11 apiece.
Jamari McDavid had a team-high 10 rebounds, but Wofford's poor shooting from outside was the achilles heel for them tonight.
"I loved the fight we showed even though we were down big early. We put pressure on them and forced some turnovers to bring us back, but it's tough to come from behind against a team like them [Furman]", said coach Garrity. "I think games like this bring us together as a team and that will be our focus as we head into the SoCon Tournament."
Wofford will focus their attention to the SoCon Tournament, scheduled from Thursday, March 4, through Sunday, March 7. The Terriers won't know their opponent until Friday's matchup between UNCG and Western Carolina concludes.
