Baseball Uses Big Inning to Crimp the Blue Hose

CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored eight runs in the third inning on the way to an 11-4 win over Presbyterian College on Wednesday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. After Presbyterian took a 2-0 lead in the first frame, the Terriers batted around in the third inning and scored eight runs for a lead they would not relinquish.     
 
Wofford is 3-1 to begin the season and Presbyterian College is 0-4. Trey Yunger led the Terriers with four hits, while Lawson Hill and John Dempsey added to hits each. The Blue Hose were led by Sean Klein with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
 
Trey Yunger singled to begin the game. He moved to second on a wild pitch and took third on a failed pick-off attempt but was stranded. The Blue Hose had a single with one out and followed that with a home run for a 2-0 lead. Wofford had the bases loaded in the top of the second with two outs before a fly ball ended the scoring chance. The Terrier defense turned a double play and then a fly ball ended the second inning.
 
A single by Lawson Hill led off the third inning and John Dempsey followed with a single. A fielder's choice by Colin Davis scored Hill for a 2-1 score. Nolen Hester walked and a single by Jack Renwick scored Dempsey to tie the game. A walk to Cameron Gill loaded the bases with two outs and an infield single by Shane Lussier drove in two runs for a 4-2 lead. An RBI single by Trey Yunger gave Wofford a 5-2 advantage. A double down the right field line by Lawson Hill drove in two more runs and when John Dempsey reached on an error the Terriers held an 8-2 lead.
 
After the Blue Hose stranded one runner in the bottom of the third, both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. Shane Lussier was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the fifth inning and stole second base. A single by Trey Yunger drove in Lussier, but Yunger was out at second on the play as the Terriers lead grew to 9-2. A walk to Lawson Hill was followed by a double by John Dempsey and in the middle of the fifth inning Wofford had a 10-2 advantage.
 
The Blue Hose had a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 10-3. Both teams left one runner on base in the sixth inning after hits. Wofford loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on a walk, hit by pitch and bunt single. A ground out by Lawson Hill added a run to make it 11-3 at the stretch. Presbyterian left two runners on base to end the seventh inning.
 
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Presbyterian scored on an RBI single with one out and it was an 11-4 lead. Matty Brown had an infield single to lead off the ninth inning and Cameron Gill walked, but a double play ended the top half. The Blue Hose went in order in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Wofford's Dom Agron (1-0) made his first career start and threw 3.0 innings with two runs allowed on three hits, along with three strikeouts. Matthew Marchal went 3.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts. Devon Sharts worked an inning with one hit allowed. Owen Parliament allowed one run on two hits in an inning. Scottie Wallace retired the side to end the game.
 
Brandon Williams (0-1) started for Presbyterian and went 2.1 innings with four runs allowed on five hits. Clark Dearman went 1.2 innings with four runs allowed on three hits. Alex Flood gave up two runs on three hits in two innings on the mound. Austin Paradis threw an inning with one run allowed. Kyle Benson had one strikeout in an inning and Will Farrar went the final frame with one hit allowed.
 
Wofford will host Xavier for a four-game series beginning on Friday afternoon at King Field. After the single game on Friday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
