Terriers Win Convincingly Over Mocs, Take Sole Possession of 3rd in SoCon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team took it to Chattanooga Saturday afternoon with a dominating 67-44 win. The team was relentless inside the paint, outscoring the Mocs 36-16, and converting 16 points on second chance opportunities.

The Terriers take their record to 10-6 (6-3 SoCon), now sitting in 3rd in the conference. The Mocs fall to 10-8 (5-4 SoCon), holding 4th place.

A slow start saw Wofford down early 4-0, but Jamari McDavid put the team on the board with a short jumper. She then snatched an offensive rebound and made the put-back, and Lilly Hatton made an elbow jumper to cut the Mocs lead to two. Late in the quarter, Jackie Carman nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give Wofford a 13-8 lead. Chattanooga came back however and evened the score 13-13 at the end of the 1st.

MaryMartha Turner gave the Terriers the lead right back as she scored after Lawren Cook grabbed a rebound and dumped it off to her under the rim. Cook had the ball once again, this time dishing it to Helen Matthews for the breakaway layup. Cook scored herself with a nice floater, and Hatton dropped a layup while getting fouled to give Wofford a 21-16 advantage midway through the 2nd quarter. McDavid came back in and scored a tough layup, while Hatton hit a three moments later. Turner ended the quarter just how it started, with a jumper from just outside the paint, giving the Terriers a 29-19 lead at halftime.

Hatton didn't miss a beat during the 15 minute intermission, scoring the first five points of the 2nd half. Niyah Lutz added two with a fade away as the shot clock winded down. Wofford was pouring on the pressure, this time with Matthews scoring five in a row, followed by Alexis Tomlin getting three on an and-one. Tomlin didn't stop there as she went hard to the rack two more times scoring on both occasions, pushing the lead to 21. Lutz ended the quarter with a deep two at the buzzer for a 50-29 lead.

Chattanooga went on a 9-2 run to start the 4th quarter before McDavid took over. She made two free-throws before scoring layups on two straight possessions. She made two more from the line by drawing two fouls and putting her team in the bonus. Carman knocked down a pair of her own before Abbey Crawford came in and scored a spinning layup. Matthews put the icing on the cake with a layup to end the game, giving Wofford just their fourth all-time win against Chattanooga.

Jamari McDavid scored a game-high 16 points with teammate Lilly Hatton right behind her at 13. MaryMartha Turner shared a game-high six rebounds with McDavid and Hatton each contributing five. The Terriers outrebounded the Mocs 39-26, and finished the game with a season-high percentage at the free-throw line with 90.9%.

"That was probably our best all-around team game. We played well offensively, stopped them on defense, out-rebounded them, and took care of the ball with a positive assist to turnover ratio", said coach Jimmy Garrity. "I'm so proud of how we came together and played as a team. Our energy was there from start to finish and we never took our foot off the gas. Games like this are what it takes to win this league…you have to play hard for 40 minutes. I have no doubt next week will be a challenge and it will take our best effort to win."

Wofford ends their home schedule with a pair of games against defending SoCon champions Samford, Thursday at 7:00 pm and Saturday at 2:00 pm.
