Copeland recorded a team-high four birdies on the day.
PINEHURST, N.C. – Wofford men's golf's Matthew Larkin (+1) and Matthew Copeland (+2) enjoyed a solid first day of action on Friday afternoon, seeing the duo hang among the field's top five to lead the Terriers after the opening round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at the par-71 Pinehurst No. 8 course.
 
The two Terriers combined for seven birdies over the first round, including both birdieing hole No. 15, as Copeland is tied for the most birdies through the opening day (4) with Xavier's Jack Korotcoff.
 
Copeland was certainly among the most impressive players in the tournament's first day, also currently third among the field of 71 players in both par-3 scoring (2.50 stroke avg.) and par-5 scoring (4.67 stroke avg.). Additionally, Larkin sits seventh among the field in par-3 scoring with a 2.75 stroke average.
 
An Atlanta, Georgia native, Larkin tallied three birdies on No. 5, No. 12 and No. 15 to tie an 18-hole low of 71 for his career, while Copeland finished with a 2-over-par 73 to pace the Terriers over the first round.
 
Overall, the Terriers recorded 14 birdies as a team for the day.
 
Wofford (+18) sits in seventh, out of 12 teams, finishing the first round with a total score of 302. Belmont (+12) leads the field, while Longwood and George Washington (+14) trail tied for second after the first day.
 
The Pinehurst Intercollegiate's field of teams consists of Belmont, Longwood, George Washington, Old Dominion, Dayton, Butler, Abeliene Christian, Elon, DePaul, Xavier and Marshall. 
 
Senior Matt Teaster opened with a pair of birdies on No. 16 and No. 2 to finish 3-over-par (74), tied for 13th as an individual, while Jackson Hill birdied hole No. 4 to be tied for 29th with a 5-over-par 76. Harry Jones rounds out Terriers in the top 35 after the first round, tied for 32nd as an individual after recording two birdies to see a first-round score of 77.
 
Walker Jones and Jay Beach (+10) both enter Saturday's second round tied for 62nd.
 
The Terriers kick off the second round of action at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Saturday morning, seeing its first pairing hit the course at 7:15 a.m.
