PINEHURST, N.C. – The Wofford men's golf team executed a strong finish to Sunday's final round of action at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, seeing junior
Matthew Copeland (+4) and sophomore
Matthew Larkin (+6) nab top-10 finishes, while vaulting up the leaderboard to see the Terriers finish third, out of 12 teams, at the par-71 Pinehurst No. 8 course in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Copeland adds his second top-10 finish of the spring, finishing tied for second – a season-best – with a 1-over-par 72, as Larkin earned his career-best finish, tied for seventh, firing a 3-over-par 74 to conclude the tournament. Copeland finished 1-under on the back nine, with a birdie on No. 10, to finish with a total score of 217, while Larkin finished with two birdies on the day to record a three-round score of 219.
Additionally, Larkin was among the tournament's top performers on par-3s and par-5s, finishing 1-under overall with a 2.92 stroke average and 4.89 stroke average, respectively – good for fourth (par-3) and second-best (par-5) among the field.
Wofford (+36) made a strong push over Sunday's final round, climbing up three spots from sixth to finish third with a total score of 888 among the competitive 12-team field. Dayton (+33) won the tournament's crown by a mere two strokes, as Abilene Christian (+35) narrowly edged the Terriers to finish in second just one stroke ahead. Butler's Logan Sabins (+1) was the individual medalist, finishing just three strokes better than Copeland, who shared the runner-up nod with three other players.
The Terriers scored wins over Belmont (+37), Elon (+42), Longwood (+45), Old Dominion (+48), George Washington (+48), Butler (+48), DePaul (+49), Marshall (+59) and Xavier (+67).
Sophomore
Jackson Hill (+10) impressed with his first career top-15 finish, finishing tied for 14
th among the 71-player field in matching an 18-hole career-low of 72. Hill was steady over the course of the weekend, tallying 38 pars over the tournament's three days – tied for second most among the field – to record a total score of 223.
Junior
Walker Jones (+18) tallied a 4-over-par 75 to finish tied for 42
nd with a total score of 231, followed by freshman
Jay Beach (+21) with a solid 2-over-par 73 in the third round to finish tied for 57
th.
Senior
Matt Teaster (+20) competed individually, finishing tied for 52
nd with a total score of 229.
Next, Wofford prepares for the Furman Intercollegiate, slated for Friday, March 26-28, in Greenville, South Carolina.
