GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's volleyball team made quick work of UNCG on Sunday evening, cruising to a swift 3-0 sweep, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16, as senior
Riley Coonan and freshman
Sarah Barham paced the Terriers to a .344 hitting percentage for the match. The win moves Wofford back into the win column with an 8-4 Southern Conference mark on the year.
Â
Coonan and Barham led the Terriers in double figures, seeing Coonan tally a team-best 12 kills on .476 hitting, followed by SoCon hitting-percentage leader
Sarah Barham, who blitzed the Spartans nearly each time she swung with 11 kills on .786 hitting. Barham also recorded five blocks, while Coonan contributed four in the match.
Â
Sophomore
Meghan Yaffa notched seven kills with five digs, two blocks and a service ace, while senior
Emily Durham recorded career-highs of six kills and two blocks to pair with three digs, an assist and an ace.
Emily Hodsdon fell short of a double-double, though, the first-year certainly continues to make her presence felt, adding 39 assists, nine digs, three blocks (matching a season-best) and two service aces.
Â
Freshman
Millie Loehr added seven kills and a dig, as classmate
Abbey Richman corralled 15 digs and three assists for the Terriers. Sophomore
Grace Kenkel saw her first appearance in old gold and black, providing an immediate spark late in the match in contributing a career-best two service aces, while first-year
Kaitlyn Brown rounds out the assistance with five digs and an ace on serve.
Â
The first set opened with both teams trading points up until
Emily Durham would capitalize off an
Abbey Richman set to spark a brief 5-0 run that extended a 14-8 lead early on. During the run, Coonan and Durham swung home a pair of kills, as the duo then recorded a paired block prior to
Kaitlyn Brown successively landing an ace on UNCG's Jenna Wiggs. Another 3-0 spurt for the Terriers, capped by an
Emily Hodsdon and
Sarah Barham block, pushed a 19-11 margin that forced a Spartans timeout, as Wofford then finished UNCG off on a kill and ace from
Meghan Yaffa, followed by Barham and
Millie Loehr kills to walk away with the 25-15 advantage.
Â
The Spartans battled resiliently in the second, hanging with the Terriers midway within one point at 16-15, though, a Barham swing and consecutive ace pushed an 18-15 cushion. Back-to-back Durham kills extended a four-point margin, 20-16, as Coonan and Yaffa added a pair of kills before the Hodsdon-Barham block tandem ultimately set up a UNCG ball-handling error off an
Abbey Richman serve to pull away in the second, 25-19.
Â
The third commenced relatively similar to the prior two sets before a
Sarah Barham solo block at the net allowed for Wofford to register five of the next eight points to lead 15-10. Kills from
Riley Coonan and
Millie Loehr got the Terriers grooving, extending a 21-14 spread after Hodsdon set up another Coonan swing that was too hot to handle.
Grace Kenkel then subbed in for Coonan, granting the Terriers a timely boost on serve by landing a pair of aces to push match-point at 24-15, as
Sarah Barham would put the nail in the coffin off Hodsdon's match-high 39
th assist to put the Spartans away, 25-16.
Â
Wofford (8-4, 8-4 SoCon) returns to action against the Spartans tomorrow evening, Monday, Mar. 15, for a 5 p.m. matchup to conclude the series in Greensboro, North Carolina.
