Volleyball Snags UNCG Series in Consecutive Straight-Set Victory

Terriers match second-most SoCon wins in a season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team corralled another dominant victory in straight sets on Monday evening, downing UNCG, 25-9, 25-14, 25-21, at Fleming Gymnasium in Greensboro, N.C. to move the Terriers' record to 9-4 in the conference.

Wofford's nine SoCon wins marks the second-most conference wins under head coach Lynze Roos, last reaching the mark in 2017 en route to a program-best 10 conference wins. The Terriers have the chance to exceed the 10-win milestone with a series sweep over SoCon rival Furman in their home finale this weekend, Mar. 21-22, at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Senior middle blocker Riley Coonan and freshman middle blocker Sarah Barham were once again the kills leaders for Wofford, tallying 10 and nine, respectively, as Barham continues her efficiency with a .692 hitting percentage on 13 swings and no errors for the evening. Coonan, Wofford's overall points leader on the season (168.0), accounted for 14.5 tonight after also matching a season-best seven blocks to go pair with three digs.

Meghan Yaffa followed with a solid seven-kill performance, while also notching 13 digs, two blocks an ace and assist. Emily Durham replicated Sunday's career-best kill total of six on the evening, while also corralling nine digs. Freshman Emily Hodsdon continues to impress in a key role for the Terriers' attack, adding 26 of Wofford's 30 assists for the match, while recording seven digs, a career-high four blocks and an ace.

Additionally, Abbey Richman continues her steady contributions at libero with a team-high 14 digs, two service aces and two assists.

After a dominant 25-9 first set victory, the Terriers picked up where they left off in opening a monster 6-0 run in the second set to push a 14-5 lead early on. A Yaffa kill and dual block from Emily Hodsdon and Riley Coonan pushed a double-digit spread for Wofford, 16-5, as a pair of UNCG ball-handling errors extended a 20-7 margin. The Spartans briefly rallied, notching seven of the ensuing 10 points to bring the score within nine, 23-14, though, a Emily Durham kill and subsequent UNCG attack error concluded the set in Wofford's favor, 25-14.

The Spartans saw enough over the first two sets to kick into gear and open a 6-5 lead in the third set. Another Hodsdon-Coonan block deadlocked the match, as senior Robyn Krause landed an ace to reclaim the lead for the Terriers for the remainder of the frame. UNCG kept within arm's length up until a Spartans service error put Abbey Richman on serve, landing back-to-back aces to force a UNCG timeout at 14-9. The two teams competed hard in trading points, as a Coonan point made for a 20-17 advantage, though, a Spartans kill and Wofford set miscue brought the score within one, 20-19. Timely UNCG errors, along with a Kennedy Smith kill, allowed Wofford to go up 23-20, as the Spartans would return back on serve to ultimately squander an opportunity at a fourth set with consecutive attack errors to end the match at 25-21.

Wofford (9-4, 9-4 SoCon) returns back to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium after a four-match road swing, hosting Furman on Sunday, Mar. 21, and Monday, Mar. 22, for its home finale. Senior Day highlights the weekend's finale, as Sunday's match is slated for 3 p.m., while first serve for Monday's matchup is scheduled for 5 p.m.
