SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's volleyball team enjoyed a spirited Senior Day matchup with SoCon rival Furman on Sunday afternoon, pulling away for Wofford's 10
th conference victory in straight sets, 29-27, 25-20, 25-13, to match a program record for most SoCon wins in a season under head coach
Lynze Roos.
Â
The Terriers move to 10-4 in the Southern Conference, matching the 2017 season's record-setting 10 conference wins, with an opportunity to exceed the 10-win mark and set a new program record with another victory over the Paladins on Monday, Mar. 22, at 5 p.m. at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Â
Prior to Sunday's match, seniors
Riley Coonan and
Emily Durham were honored and recognized for their commitment and dedication to the Wofford Volleyball program over the past four seasons – including Coonan being recognized as Wofford's fourth all-time leader in solo blocks (78) and seventh all-time in total blocks (302).
Â
Fittingly, Durham enjoyed a career-high performance in Sunday's sweep over the Paladins, hitting .312 on a career-best seven kills while adding four digs and a block, as Coonan also delivered seven kills in the match to pair with three blocks and two digs.
Â
Sarah Barham led the Terriers' attack on the day with 12 kills on .350 hitting, five blocks and an ace, while sophomore
Meghan Yaffa contributed nine kills, five blocks, two aces and assists and four digs. Freshman
Millie Loehr added four kills, a block and assist, as setter
Emily Hodsdon paced Wofford with 34 assists and six digs to go along with two kills and aces apiece.
Â
Robyn Krause was solid on serve for the Terriers, landing two aces and recording seven digs, while freshman libero
Abbey Richman was steady on defense with a match-high 18 digs and a kill and assist.
Â
After a neck-and-neck first set that saw eight lead changes and 13 tied scores, the Terriers managed to find its rhythm for the remainder of the match and hold steady leads throughout.
Â
Both squads traded leads throughout the first set, as a Furman service error and
Emily Durham kill gave Wofford a 21-19 advantage. A Hodsdon point ensued, though, Furman crept back to take the lead (23-22) after blocks from Sydney Tanner and Courtney Hoffman to force a Wofford timeout. The lead would switch hands two more times up until a Furman attack error gave the Terriers its final lead at 27-26. A block tied the margin once more, however,
Sarah Barham and
Emily Durham would seal the deal with back-to-back kills to go up early, 29-27.
Â
A brief 4-0 run in the second set, followed by kills from
Emily Hodsdon and
Riley Coonan, built up an early 12-6 lead that forced a Paladins timeout, as another Coonan swing and a Furman attack error pushed a 15-10 edge midway through. A
Millie Loehr kill would allow for a three-point spurt, seeing a point from Durham and a
Sarah Barham block, as the Terriers rattled Furman into a ball-handling error that would summon another Furman timeout at 20-14. The Paladins came out the break determined, climbing back within one point, 20-19, prior to Furman errors and another Coonan kill providing a 23-20 cushion. Another Paladins' error set up set-point, as Yaffa denied a Furman swing at the net to claim a 2-0 advantage at 25-20.
Â
The third set would be all Wofford, opening on a 6-0 run to put the Paladins in an early 8-1 hole. The Paladins briefly found a few points, though, Wofford continued its chemistry in busting an 18-9 spread after a Barham kill and paired block from Loehr and Barham. The teams traded a couple points up until
Meghan Yaffa would get on serve, seeing a kill from Yaffa and Barham before Yaffa would land back-to-back aces to bring the lead to 23-12. Durham would notch her career-high on a swing that summoned match-point, as the Paladins would end the match on a Sydney Tanner attack error that granted the Terriers its third consecutive straight-set victory at 25-13.
