SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior
Riley Coonan led the Terriers with a match-best 17 kills in Wofford's home finale at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, as the Furman Paladins (5-9, 5-9 SoCon) would rebound from a straight-set defeat on Sunday with a gutsy five-set victory (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 10-15) to cut a three-match win streak for Wofford and hand the Terriers its first loss at home on Monday evening.
Â
Despite the loss, Wofford recorded its best home record in a season since 1989, finishing with a 7-1 home record at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The last time Wofford only suffered one home loss in a season was when the Terriers went 13-1 at the Benjamin Johnson Arena during the 1989 season.
Â
The Terriers slip to 10-5 overall and in the Southern Conference heading into Thursday's regular season finale, scheduled to travel to Cullowhee, North Carolina for the final makeup match of its series with Western Carolina. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. at the Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
Â
Coonan accounted for 18.5 points in the match, hitting .400, while also recording two blocks and three digs.
Meghan Yaffa earned her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and a season-high 16 digs, while notching five of Wofford's season-high 11 aces on the evening – a career-best for Yaffa – to pair with two blocks.
Â
Sarah Barham rounds out the Terriers in double figures with 10 kills, four blocks and two digs, as
Kennedy Smith added six kills, an ace and block and two digs.
Emily Hodsdon recorded her sixth career double-double with 49 assists and 11 digs, as
Kelly Hubbard and
Millie Loehr contributed three and two kills, respectively. Freshman
Abbey Richman finished with 18 digs at libero.
Â
After falling the first set, the Terriers got things rolling in the second, as
Emily Hodsdon landed an ace on serve midway through to spark a 3-0 spurt on blocks from
Sarah Barham and
Meghan Yaffa prior to a Furman attack error to lead 17-9. A Yaffa kill and
Kennedy Smith block pushed a double-digit advantage (20-10), though, the Paladins rattled off four straight to force a Wofford timeout at 20-14. Out of the break, a Barham block and Smith kill got Wofford back on track, as a
Riley Coonan point and Furman attack error set up set-point for Hodsdon, who landed a kill to take the second set, 25-15.
Â
The Paladins hopped out to an early 7-1 lead in the third, prior to the Terriers rallying back to close in and force a Furman timeout trialing 9-8. The Terriers then took the lead after a pair of kills from Coonan (11-10), as Coonan continued to pace Wofford to bring about a 15-11 lead.
Abbey Richman would land an ace on serve, while
Kelly Hubbard provided a lift for the Terriers with a couple kills before Smith and Coonan pushed a 23-18 margin. The Paladins briefly answer with a pair of points, though,
Kennedy Smith would bring the third set to a close with another kill to take a 2-1 lead for the match at 25-20.
Â
The Paladins came out strong in the fourth, building a 13-6 lead after back-to-back aces from Furman's Kelsey Watkins, though, the Terriers found their rhythm in closing in within one point on a 6-0 run, 13-12.
Meghan Yaffa then showcased her heroics on serve, landing aces on three out of the following four serves to claim a 17-16 advantage over the Paladins. Furman would regain the lead, 21-19, as the Terriers saw kills from Smith and
Bella Zeman keep Wofford in it, though, late errors would ultimately hand the set over to Furman at 25-21.
Â
The fifth set was extremely competitive, though, Furman opened with the edge, extending a 5-1 lead to force Wofford to talk things over. The Paladins built the lead to 8-1 just before a
Sarah Barham block gave the Terriers life, as kills from Yaffa cut into the lead at 10-5. A trio of points from
Riley Coonan allowed Wofford to creep back in, 11-8, though, the Paladins regrouped after a timeout to take a 13-9 lead on back-to-back Maya Mrus kills. Mrus followed up to summon match-point, as another Coonan kill and Furman attack error gave the Terriers hope, though, Furman's Kelsey Watkins would manage to find the winner on a crucial point to come away with the victory in five sets at 15-10.
