MACON, Ga. – The Wofford College baseball team began a weekend series with a 6-4 loss to Mercer at OrthoGeorgia Park on Friday night. After waiting out a rain delay that pushed the start time back almost two hours, the Bears scored two runs in the first inning and one in the fifth inning while keeping Wofford off the scoreboard until the eighth inning. Mercer added three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the Terriers rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth before leaving the tying runs on base to end the game.
Wofford is 13-8 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference. Mercer is 11-9 overall and 1-0 in the league. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday. The Terriers were held to just four hits in the game, while the Bears had eight hits. Both teams had a pair of errors on the night.
NOTABLES
- Ryan Galanie led the Terriers with one hit and two RBIs. Bill Knight was 3-for-3 from the plate with an RBI for the Bears.
- Wofford pitcher Hayes Heinecke (2-4) went 6.1 innings with three runs allowed on four hits and five strikeouts. Luke Stephens gave up three runs on four his in 1.1 innings, while Owen Parliament recorded one out.
- Mercer starter Garett Delano (2-0) worked 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits, along with six strikeouts. Luke Sutko earned his third save of the season by going the final 1.2 innings with two runs allowed on two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the first, the Bears led off with a single. With two outs, a home run by Garett Delano made it a 2-0 game.
- Mercer added singles in the second and third innings.
- In the top of the fourth, Trey Yunger walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. John Dempsey reached on an error but Yunger was out at home on the play.
- The Bears opened the bottom of the fifth with a batter reaching second on an error. A sacrifice bunt followed by a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 3-0.
- Shane Lussier had the first hit of the game for the Terriers in the top of the sixth inning, but a double play ended the top half. Wofford then turned a double play to end the bottom half of the frame.
- With one out in the top of the seventh, Colin Davis singled but was unable to advance. The Bears left one on base to end the inning.
- In the top of the eighth, Zeb Roos was hit by a pitch and Andrew Calhoun walked. A wild pitch advanced the runners and a ground out by Ryan Galanie cut the lead to 3-1. A walk to Shane Lussier had runners on the corners and a ground out by Lawson Hill drove in a run.
- A double opened the bottom of the eighth for the Bears. With two outs, a pair of singles made it a 4-2 game. Another double plated two runs for a 6-2 lead before a ground out ended the inning with the bases loaded.
- John Dempsey singled with one out in the top of the ninth and Zeb Roos walked with two outs. Cameron Gill reached on a fielder's choice with an error on the play allowing a run to score. A single by Ryan Galanie added a run for a 6-4 score. A strikeout ended the game with the tying runs on base for the Terriers.
