SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a match that was originally scheduled to take place Sunday afternoon, a postponement due to rain saw the Terriers and Bucs go head-to-head on Monday morning. Wofford looked good in both doubles and singles, but ETSU got the better of them, upending the Terriers 6-1. Wofford falls back to 2-2 in SoCon play, while the Bucs are now 3-0 and tied with Furman at the top of the conference.
Despite having a lead for most of doubles play, Wofford fell late as the Bucs took the doubles point.
Jenna Vroman and
Lilie Steryous were up 5-4, but ETSU battled back to take the match 7-5. The Bucs also took the third pairing as they defeated
Georgia Fischer and
Brittney Wilbur 6-2.
Ansley Hardeman and
Liz Massie also had a lead, but the Bucs rallied again to sweep doubles.
Wofford had a tough time against the talented ETSU side, but they did show fight in all of their individual matches. Vroman took a lead in her second set before falling 6-1, 6-2, and Massie had an early advantage in her match before losing 6-3, 6-1.
Emely Kahrs had a lead in second set, but ETSU's Maria Carvajal came back to sweep the match. Wilbur was beat in a tiebreaker after coming back to win set two, while Steryous roared back in set two to force a tiebreaker, and won, to give the Terriers their point in the match.
"ETSU played really well; they competed hard and put a lot of pressure on us. They don't give up easy points, so we have to put our own pressure on them and take court position", said coach Hall. "I'm really proud of Lilie's comeback and I'm proud of how every girl played today. In situations we had today, we have to make our own opportunities and convert on them, and we will continue to work on that."
