Ralph Breaks Program Goals and Points Record, Career Day Lifts Wofford Over Presbyterian 17-13

Junior Elisabeth Ralph becomes Wofford’s all-time goals (60) and points (70) leader with a career-high nine-goal performance

CLINTON, S.C. – Junior midfielder and SoCon Offensive Player of the Week Elisabeth Ralph put out a historic performance for the Wofford women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, piling on a career-best nine goals to become the program's all-time goals (60) and points (70) leader and pace the Terriers to their first win of the season in avenging an early loss to the Presbyterian Blue Hose (2-5), 17-13, at Bailey Memorial Stadium.

The win marks the first for the program since a 19-6 win over Delaware State on April 20, 2019 and the first for head coach Kim Orie Eldridge, as the Terriers move to 1-6 overall on the year to cap a four-match road swing.

Ralph passes Hannah Mutch '19 (51) for the record, as her nine goals and nine points also marked a single-game program record for most goals and points. The nine goals also marked a Southern Conference single-game record, topping the previous eight-goal record set by Mercer's Hailey Rhatigan against Furman on May 4, 2019.

She additionally matched a program-best with three free-position goals (Ally Furnari, vs. Gardner-Webb, Feb. 29, 2020) and also finished with three draw controls.

The Hillsdale, N.J. native moves to a team-best 23 goals on the season – currently fourth-best all-time for an individual season – which sets a career-best for her in an individual season, as she surpassed the previous individual season-high of 22 goals set during her freshman campaign in 2019.

Ally Furnari recorded a season-high four goals, while adding three draw controls and a ground ball, as Olivia Abé contributed a consecutive four-point performance with one goal and three assists. Emma Gentile finished with two goals and a career-best eight draw controls, as the eight draw controls also matched a program-best (Grace Geraghty, vs. Hartford, Mar. 16, 2019). Gentile also added two ground balls and one caused turnover in the match.

Shannon Wulff added two points with two assists and scooped a ground ball, while senior Hannah Wurzel notched her first goal of the season on a free-position to couple with a team-best three ground balls. Senior Kelsey Thompson corralled her first win of the year at goalkeeper with 13 saves.

Leah Hurley led the way with two caused turnovers and a ground ball, as Emma Krasinski corralled two draw controls in the match. Moira Carroll (two ground balls, one caused turnover) and Maeve Moran (one ground ball) round out the Terriers' contributions in the victory.

The Terriers outshot the Blue Hose for the match, 37-33, while also winning the advantage in draw controls with an 18-14 margin.

Wofford played steady through the first 30 minutes, trailing just 8-7 at halftime prior to ringing in 10 goals in the second half, while amplifying its defensive efforts, forcing 12 PC turnovers, and dominance at the X to take control late in the match.

The Blue Hose got on the board first early on, before Olivia Abé delivered a pass to Ralph that found the back of the net in the 26th minute to put Wofford on the board and claim sole possession of the all-time goals record, her 52nd at the time, to knot the score up. Abé and Ralph goals continued, as Ralph would notch the early hat trick on a free-position shot in the 15th minute (4-4), though, the Blue Hose answered with back-to-back goals to take a 6-4 lead midway through.

Ally Furnari then commenced her scoring presence, bringing the differential to one after zipping one in, as Shannon Wulff then found Ralph for another timely score to deadlock the margin at 6-6 with 6:39 left in the frame. A costly foul and man-up opportunity allowed for a pair of Presbyterian goals, though, Ralph continued her heroics with her third free-position score with 22 seconds left to bring the deficit to one (8-7) heading into the intermission.

Wofford opened with the momentum to start the second half, ringing in three consecutive goals to take its first lead of the match, 10-9, by the 22:34 mark. Ralph opened the half with her sixth and seventh goals unassisted to knot the margin at 9-all, before Olivia Abé gave the Terriers the lead by capitalizing on a free-position shot that beat Presbyterian's goalkeeper Heidi Shafer.

Both teams traded goals, seeing Furnari's second goal in the sequence, though, Presbyterian reclaimed a 12-11 lead with 11:17 on the clock prior to Wofford blitzing the Blue Hose with momentum-swinging 5-0 run that ultimately conquered the victory for the Terriers.

Wofford embraced its resilience once again, sparked by a Furnari match-tying goal on Abé's second feed of the day, while an Emma Gentile score and Hannah Wurzel's first goal, on a critical free-position shot, made for a 14-12 advantage. Ralph continued to put on a scoring clinic, rifling her record-setting ninth goal with 3:24 left, as Gentile then capped the run with yet another free-position goal for the Terriers to boast a 16-12 lead with two minutes on the clock.

The Blue Hose found their final goal shortly after, while Furnari would conclude the scoring with her fourth of the day at the 30 second mark to close out Wofford's first road victory of the year, 17-13.

Next, Wofford (1-6, 0-2 SoCon) returns to Spartanburg, hosting Stetson at Gibbs Stadium on Friday, April 16, for a 12 p.m. matchup.
