Baseball Ends Series At Jacksonville With 4-2 Loss

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A three-game weekend series for the Wofford College baseball team ended with a 4-2 loss to Jacksonville University at John Sessions Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins scored one run in the third inning and added three in the seventh. Wofford plated one run each in the eighth and ninth innings but left the tying runner on base to end the game.
 
Wofford is 7-5 to begin the season, while Jacksonville University is now 3-8 overall. The Dolphins swept the series. The Terriers had only hits in the game, while the Dolphins had six in a game dominated in the early innings by pitching.  
 
NOTABLES
  • Nolen Hester, Colin Davis, Brennen Dorighi and Trey Yunger each had hits for the Terriers. The Dolphins had six different players with one hit each.
  • Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Carney (1-2) threw a career-high 6.2 innings with a career-best 11 strikeouts. The 11 strikeouts are tied for the 11th most in school history. Dalton Rhadans went the final 1.1 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
  • Jacksonville starter Mason Adams (1-0) allowed only one hit in seven innings, along with four strikeouts. Avery Love earned the save with two strikeouts in the ninth inning.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first hit of the game came in the bottom of the third inning for the Dolphins. A double with two outs gave Jacksonville a 1-0 lead.
  • The Dolphins added two hits in the bottom of the fourth but both runners were stranded.
  • In the top of the seventh, Colin Davis led off with a single before a double play and ground out sent the game to the stretch.
  • Jacksonville had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with two outs after a pair of hit by pitches and a single. A walk brought in a run and a double made it 4-0.
  • Zeb Roos walked to lead off the eighth inning, but a double play was turned. Ryan Galanie was hit by a pitch and TreyYunger singled. Nolen Hester had an RBI single for a 4-1 score, but two runners were stranded.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Terriers had one out when John Dempsey was hit by a pitch and Jack Renwick walked. A single with two outs by Brennen Dorighi drove in a run for a 4-2 game before a strikeout ended the contest with the two runners left of base.
     
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Todd Interdonato – "It was a tough weekend for us all around. Elliot gave us a really good start today and unfortunately we weren't able to push enough across to make it hold up. We will get back to work this week and look forward to playing again on Tuesday."
 
UP NEXT
Wofford hosts Presbyterian College on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. before beginning a four-game weekend series against Toledo on Friday afternoon.
