SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team did well to position themselves into a 1-1 game that headed into overtime. Unfortunately, six minutes into the extra period, Mercer found the back of the net for a 2-1 final.
Both teams went on the attack early with Mercer getting the first shot, but it sailed over the net. Wofford came back as
Rachel Rasins had two chances at goal, but both were saved easily. A parade of shots continued as both teams searched for the opening goal. The Bears were given a penalty in the 39
th minute, but
Maria Mon denied the spot kick and the following rebound to keep the score level. Mon made one more save at the end of the half to keep the score 0-0.
The Terriers came out of halftime poised to open the scoring and that's exactly what they did.
Leanna Guion cut inside to her right foot and smack a shot over the keeper's hand into the top corner to give Wofford the 1-0 lead. Mercer didn't take that too kindly as they came back a minute later and tied the match, sliding it past Mon into the bottom corner. Again, it was a plethora of shots and both goalkeepers had to be steady. The game would ultimately go to overtime, but it was Mercer who struck gold with a looping shot that just snuck under the crossbar to give them the win.
