Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – On Friday, the Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader against VMI at Gray-Minor Stadium. In the first game, the Terriers scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 tie on the way to a 7-1 victory. Wofford was leading game two by a 3-1 score before the Keydets punched back with eight unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings on the way to an 11-7 win.
 
Wofford is 23-14 overall and 11-6 in the Southern Conference. VMI is 10-22 overall and 6-11 in league play. The third game of the series will be played on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
 
GAME ONE NOTABLES
  • The Terriers had 13 hits in the game to four for the Keydets. Trey Yunger, Jack Renwick, Daniel Hirose and John Dempsey each had two hits. Nolen Hester and John Dempsey each had a pair of RBIs.
  • Josh Vitus (1-2) started for Wofford and went six innings with one run allowed on three hits, along with four strikeouts. Dalton Rhadans earned his fourth save of the season not allowing a run in the final three innings.
  • VMI starter Nathan Light (1-8) went 4.1 innings before leaving due to injury. He allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Ben Capehart worked 2.2 innings with three runs allowed on five hits. Sam Ewald allowed one run on three hits in the final two innings.
 
GAME ONE HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams had singles in the first inning and left a runner on base. Cameron Gill singled with one out in the top of the second and he moved to third on a hit-and-run by Daniel Hirose. A sacrifice bunt by John Dempsey drove in Gill for a 1-0 lead.
  • With one out in the bottom of the third, a walk was followed by an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. The Keydets stranded runners on the corners. Both teams were retired in order in the fourth frame.
  • Daniel Hirose singled to lead off the fifth inning and moved to second on a passed ball. A double by John Dempsey drove Hirose in for a 2-1 score. With one out a double by Trey Yunger scored Dempsey. Jack Renwick was hit by a pitch and Lawson Hill singled to load the bases. A single by Nolen Hester plated two runs and he moved to second on an error. Wofford pushed the lead to 6-1 on a sacrifice fly by Zeb Roos, but the bases were left loaded by the Terriers.
  • In the top of the seventh, Jack Renwick had a double with two outs but was stranded. The Keydets were retired in the bottom of the seventh.
  • John Dempsey led off the eighth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, a double by Jack Renwick drove in Dempsey for a 7-1 advantage.
  • The Terriers left two on base in the top of the ninth after a double by Zeb Roos and a hit by pitch to Harris Beckley. VMI left two on base in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
 
GAME TWO NOTABLES
  • The Keydets had 18 hits in the game, the most by a Wofford opponent this season. Zac Morris was 4-of-4 and Justin Starke as 4-of-5. Wofford had six hits with two of them by John Dempsey.
  • Wofford starter Sam Stratton (2-3) went 3.1 innings with six runs allowed on eight hits. Matthew Marchal allowed five runs on eight hits, along with five strikeouts. Devon Sharts went the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run on two hits and four strikeouts.
  • Jacob Menders (3-2) started for VMI and in 7.0 innings allowed four runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Trey Morgan
 
GAME TWO HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wofford had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the first inning after a pair of hit by pitches and a walk. A fielder's choice by Zeb Roos plated a run and then an RBI single by John Dempsey made it 2-0. The Terriers left the bases loaded to end the top half. The Keydets led off with a single and followed with an RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • The Terriers left two on base in the top of the second after walks and VMI had a single in their half of the inning.
  • Shane Lussier doubled to lead off the fourth inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly by Nolen Hester scored Lussier for a 3-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Keydets led off with a single and the runner advanced to second on a wild pitch. An RBI single cut the lead to 3-2. A sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch moved the runner to third, with an infield single tying the game at 3. A double with one out gave the Keydets a 4-3 advantage. On a triple and an error, two more runs scored to make it 6-3.
  • Brennen Dorighi singled to lead off the fifth inning. With two outs, John Dempsey doubled but Dorighi was out at home on the play. VMI had back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the fifth for a run and an RBI single pushed the lead to 8-3. With two outs an RBI single added a run.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth, Matty Brown walked and Nolen Hester singled. Jack Renwick reached on an error that allowed a run to make it a 9-4 game. The Keydets had runners on the corners and two outs when back-to-back singles each drove in runs to give them an 11-4 lead.
  • Wofford was retired in order in the top of the seventh and VMI left one on base in the bottom half after a single. The Terriers went in order in the eighth and the Keydets stranded one. In the ninth,
  • In the top of the ninth, Wofford loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks. A single by Trey Yunger scored a run and a sacrifice fly by Zeb Roos plated a run. A ground out by John Dempsey made it 11-7 before the final out.
 
QUOTABLE
Wofford head coach Todd Interdonato – "Overall the first game was a great team win. The entire defense played great and the way Lawson Hill catches always makes it easier of the pitchers."
 
ON DECK
The Terriers and Keydets will play the final game of the series on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. due to rain forecast in the afternoon. Wofford will then travel to Georgia State on Tuesday.
