DURHAM, N.C. – On Tuesday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 9-6 by Duke University at Jack Coombs Field. Wofford scored twice in the first inning, but the Blue Devils scored the next six runs for a 6-2 lead through four innings. The Terriers made it a 7-6 game in the middle of the sixth inning, but Duke scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and kept Wofford off the scoreboard in the final three innings for the final margin.
Wofford is 30-17 overall and Duke is 21-20 overall. The Terriers had ten hits in the game, including two each from
Lawson Hill and
Trey Yunger. The Blue Devils had 17 hits, led by Ethan Murray with four hits and three RBIs.
NOTABLES
- The series between the two teams began in 1902 and it was the first meeting since the 2011 season.
- Video review was used three times in the game, with one play for each team being overturned and one call standing in favor of Wofford.
- Sam Stratton (3-4) started for Wofford and allowed five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Luke Stephens worked 1.2 innings with one run allowed on four hits and two strikeouts. Dom Agron gave up one run on two hits in an inning. Dalton Rhadans went two innings with two runs allowed on four hits. Owen Parliament had two strikeouts and one hit allowed in an inning. The five pitchers only issued one walk in the game.
- Duke starter Josh Nifong went two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on three hits. Josh Allen did not allow a hit in two innings and struck out four batters. Richard Brereton (1-0) went 2.1 innings with two hits allows. Aaron Beasley worked two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on two hits. Matt Dockman added 1.1 innings without allowing a run on two hits. Jimmy Loper did not allow a hit in an inning. Marcus Johnson had three strikeouts and allowed one hit in the final inning for his third save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nolen Hester started the game with a triple down the right field line and he scored on a single by Lawson Hill. Trey Yunger walked and a sacrifice bunt by Jack Renwick advanced the runners. A walk to Zeb Roos loaded the bases and a walk to Cameron Gill gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead.
- Duke had a single with one out in the bottom of the first but a double play by the Terriers ended the inning. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second, the Blue Devils had a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the frame to make it a 2-1 game.
- In the top of the third, Trey Yunger walked, Jack Renwick was hit by a pitch and John Dempsey loaded the bases as he reached on an error. A pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice ended the top half with three runners stranded.
- The Blue Devils led off the bottom of the third with a single and with one out three straight doubles gave them a 4-2 advantage. With two outs, another double made it 5-2. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning.
- With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Duke added a run on an RBI single for a 6-2 score.
- Wofford had one out in the fifth inning when Jack Renwick walked. He scored on a double by John Dempsey. Cameron Gill singled and drove in Dempsey to make it a 6-4 game.
- In the bottom of the fifth, a lead-off double was followed by a walk with one out. An RBI single gave Duke a 7-4 lead.
- Matty Brown tripled for Wofford with one out in the top of the fifth inning and Nolen Hester reached on an error, then stole second. A sacrifice fly by Lawson Hill scored Brown and an infield single by Trey Yunger allowed Hester to cross the plate with a 7-6 score. Jack Renwick added a single, but Yunger was thrown out at home on the play to end the top of the sixth.
- Duke had one out in the bottom of the sixth when back-to-back singles added a run for an 8-6 lead. With one out in the top of the seventh, Andrew Calhoun had a pinch-hit single. The Blue Devils had runners at first and third with two outs when a single drove in a run for a 9-6 game.
- Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth inning and Duke had a single in the bottom of the frame.
- Lawson Hill singled to lead off the top of the ninth inning. Three straight strikeouts ended the game.
