Baseball Falls in SoCon Tournament Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. –  In the opening game of the 2021 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament presented by Holston Gases, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 16-5 by Western Carolina at Fluor Field on Thursday. The Catamounts jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and the Terriers scored twice in the fifth inning. Both teams added two runs in the sixth inning. After Wofford scored once in the seventh, the Catamounts had three runs in the eighth inning and four in the ninth for the 16-5 final margin.  
 
Wofford is 35-20 overall and the #1 seed in the tournament. Western Carolina, the #4 seed in the tournament, is 27-19 on the season. The teams combined for 28 hits in the game.
 
NOTABLES
  • Shane Lussier led the Terriers with a single, double and triple as he was 3-of-3 from the plate. Nolen Hester, Lawson Hill and Trey Yunger added two hits each.
  • The Catamounts had three home runs in the game and four doubles among their 16 hits.
  • Wofford starter Josh Vitus (3-5) went three innings with seven runs allowed on six hits. Sam Stratton worked 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on five hits and three strikeouts. Zach Byron worked two innings with three runs allowed on one hit. Dom Marcoccio allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Devon Sharts gave up three runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Owen Parliament went the final two-thirds with one run allowed on a hit.
  • Jack Snyder (2-0) started for Western Carolina allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings with five strikeouts. Nick Hyde gave up one run on two hits in an inning. Zach Franklin went the final two innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With one out in the top of the first, the Catamounts got on the board with a solo home run. After the Terriers turned a double play to end the top half, Nolen Hester led off with a single. Three straight outs left him stranded at first.
  • In the top of the second a single was followed by a sacrifice bunt. An RBI single made it 2-0. A walk and hit by pitch had the bases loaded when a double to center field drove in three runs for a 5-0 lead.
  • After Wofford was retired in order to end the second inning, the Catamounts led off with a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice. With two outs, a home run extended the lead to 7-0. In the bottom of the third, Shane Lussier opened with a single, but with one out the Catamounts turned a double play.
  • The Catamounts had back-to-back singles with two outs in the top of the fourth inning before a strikeout ended the half. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Lawson Hill doubled. Trey Yunger reached on a fielder's choice and Jack Renwick was hit by a pitch, but both runners were stranded.
  • Western Carolina was retired in order in the top of the fifth inning. With one out in the bottom half, Shane Lussier doubled and Matty Brown singled. A single by Nolen Hester drove in Lussier and a ground out by Colin Davis scored Brown for a 7-2 game.
  • A double opened the sixth inning for the Catamounts and they had runners on the corners after a bunt single. An intentional walk loaded the bases and a single plated a pair of runs. Three runners were stranded to end the top half with the score 9-2.
  • Trey Yunger led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and Jack Renwick doubled off the bottom of the Green Monster. A sacrifice fly by John Dempsey scored Yunger and with two outs a triple by Shane Lussier made it a 9-4 contest.
  • After the Catamounts were retired in order in the top of the seventh, Lawson Hill singled with two outs in the bottom half. Trey Yunger drove in Hill with a triple to cut the lead to 9-5.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, the Catamounts led off with a hit by pitch and single. With one out a fielding error allowed a run to score and then a double off the wall made it a 12-5 lead.
  • John Dempsey opened the bottom of the eighth with a double and Shane Lussier walked with one out. The Catamounts turned a doubleheader to end the inning.
  • With one out in the top of the ninth, a walk was followed by a home run to give the Catamounts a 14-5 advantage. They added a single and a double and with back-to-back wild pitches scored two more runs for a 16-5 lead. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the ninth after Colin Davis walked.
 
UP NEXT
Wofford will play on Friday, May 28 at 3:30 p.m. against #3 Mercer, who lost to #2 Samford 10-8 on Thursday night.
