SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team scored four runs in the first inning on the way to an 11-2 win over The Citadel on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers added three runs in the fourth inning, one run in the seventh and three runs in the eighth inning to open the weekend series with a victory.
Wofford is 28-16 overall and 15-7 in the SoCon. The Citadel is 11-30 overall and 3-18 in league play. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday to complete the series.
NOTABLES
- The Terriers had twelve hits in the game, including three each by Nolen Hester and Lawson Hill. Trey Yunger had three RBIs. The Bulldogs had nine hits.
- Wofford had eight stolen bases in the game, with three by Jack Renwick to give him a total of 23 for the season.
- Josh Vitus (2-3) started for Wofford and went a career-long 7.2 innings with two runs allowed on eight hits. He tied a career-high with six strikeouts. Sam Stratton faced one batter and recorded an out. Jake Zoller made his first appearance of the season and allowed one hit with three strikeouts to tie a career-high.
- The Citadel starter Lathon Todd (2-7) worked 4.2 innings with seven runs allowed on eleven hits and four strikeouts. Caleb Speedy went 1.1 innings without allowing a hit, but issued five walks. Harmon Cox allowed one run in two thirds of an inning. Gant Starling gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Zach Jones went the final two-thirds of an inning with one hit allowed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After The Citadel was retired in order in the top of the first, Nolen Hester led off the Wofford half with a single. The Terriers added three more hits and took advantage of two errors, along with three stolen bases, to take a 4-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
- The Bulldogs had two out in the top of the second when a double was followed by an RBI single for a 4-1 score. Wofford had two hits in the bottom of the second but were unable to plate a run.
- In the third and fourth innings, the Bulldogs had one hit in each frame.
- John Dempsey led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run for a 5-1 advantage. It was his fourth home run of the season and 14th of his career. Colin Davis singled and stole second. He scored on a double by Lawson Hill, who then scored on a single by Trey Yunger for a 7-1 lead.
- A lead-off single in the top of the fifth for the Bulldogs was unable to advance. Wofford then loaded the bases with a single and two walks, but all three runners were stranded.
- The Bulldogs got one run back on a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to make it 7-2 and Wofford left the bases loaded to end the inning. The Citadel was retired in order to send the game to the seventh inning stretch.
- Matty Brown walked with one out in the bottom of the seventh. He stole second and moved to third on an error. Colin Davis was hit by a pitch and stole second. A wild pitch advanced the runners for an 8-2 lead.
- With two outs in the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs had a pair of singles but they were stranded. Wofford loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. A sacrifice fly by Matty Brown drove in one run and then a triple by Nolen Hester cleared the bases for an 11-2 score.
- In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs left a pair of runners on base after a single and walk.

After an off day on Saturday due to graduation for The Citadel, the Terriers and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 2:00 p.m., with the second game approximately 45 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
