SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Mother's Day, the Wofford College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against The Citadel at Russell C. King Field to earn a series sweep. Wofford rallied for an 11-10 win in the first game and earned a 9-0 win in game two behind a masterful pitching performance by
Elliot Carney.
With the first game tied at three after two innings, the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the third inning for a 10-3 lead. Wofford chipped away with two runs each in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take an 11-10 advantage and the Bulldogs left the bases loaded in the ninth. In the second game, the Terriers scored four runs in the second inning. They added two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth for the 9-0 final score.
Elliot Carney threw a complete game shutout with only one hit allowed and ten strikeouts.
Wofford is 30-16 overall and 17-7 in the SoCon. The Citadel is 11-32 overall and 3-20 in league play. The Terriers won five of the six games played between the two teams this season and eleven of the last twelve meetings since 2018.
GAME ONE NOTABLES
- Both teams had 13 hits in the contest. Wofford was led by Colin Davis with three hits and Nolen Hester with two hits and four RBIs. The Citadel had three hits from Ryan McCarthy and the team combined for three home runs.
- Wofford has now played in sixteen games decided by one run and have a 12-4 mark in those games.
- Devon Sharts started for Wofford and went 1.1 innings with three runs allowed on five hits. Zach Byron allowed four runs on three hits in an inning. Matthew Marchal went 2.1 innings with three runs allowed on three hits. Dom Marcoccio did not allow a hit in 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Clay Schwaner (5-0) worked an inning with two hits allowed. Dalton Rhadans earned his sixth save of the season without allowing a hit in the ninth.
- The Citadel starter Jake Pilarski allowed five runs on seven hits, along with two strikeouts, in five innings. Chace Cooper gave up two runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Devin Beckley (1-6) went the final 2.2 innings with four runs allowed on four hits.
GAME ONE HOW IT HAPPENED
- With one out in the top of the first, back-to-back doubles by the Bulldogs drove in a run. A single with two outs made it 2-0 and they stranded two batters. Colin Davis doubled with one out for the Terriers, but was unable to advance.
- The Citadel led off the second inning with a double and scored on a single with one out for a 3-0 lead. Jack Renwick had a lead-off single for the Terriers in the bottom of the second and with two outs back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A double into the left field corner by Nolen Hester cleared the bases to tie the game at 3-3.
- The Bulldogs regained the lead in the top of the third inning with a solo home run. They added a two-run homer, an RBI single and a three-run home run to push the lead to 10-3. Wofford was retired in order to end the third inning.
- In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs left one runner on base in the top half and the Terriers stranded two in the bottom half.
- After The Citadel stranded one runner in the top of the fifth inning, Colin Davis led off with a double. With one out, a triple by Trey Yunger drove in Davis and a ground out by Jack Renwick scored Yunger to cut the lead to 10-5.
- The Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the sixth and Wofford led off with a single by Brennen Dorighi and a walk to Andrew Calhoun. A balk advanced the runners and a ground out by Matty Brown plated a run. An RBI single by Nolen Hester made it a 10-7 game.
- In the seventh inning, the Bulldogs went in order and Trey Yunger reached on an error. A double by Jack Renwick drove in Yunger and Renwick moved to third on a fielding error. A single by John Dempsey allowed Renwick to make it a 10-9 score.
- The Citadel left two runners on base in the top of the eighth. Nolen Hester reached on an error and Colin Davis singled. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position and a single through the right side by Trey Yunger drove in two runs as Wofford took an 11-10 lead.
- In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs led off with a single and a walk. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and an intentional walk loaded the bases with two outs. A fly ball to Colin Davis in centerfield ended the game.
GAME TWO NOTABLES
- The Terriers had eleven hits in the game, including three by Nolen Hester and two each from Trey Yunger and Cameron Gill.
- With the win, Wofford has reached 30 victories in six of the last seven full seasons.
- The win was the sixth straight for the Terriers, their longest winning streak of the season.
- Wofford starter Elliot Carney (5-2) threw his second complete game shutout of the season. He was one out away from a no-hitter in the top of the ninth. He struck out ten batters and did not issue a walk. It was his third game of ten or more strikeouts this season.
- Cameron Reeves (2-9) started for The Citadel and went six innings with four runs allowed on six hits, along with nine strikeouts. Zach Jones worked an inning with two unearned runs allowed on two hits. Simon Graf allowed three runs on a hit. Will Bastian went the final inning with two hits allowed.
GAME TWO HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were retired in order in the first inning and The Citadel went in order in the top of the second.
- Wofford had a pair of infield singles by Jack Renwick and Cameron Gill in the bottom of the second. With two outs the Terriers loaded the bases with a walk. A ground rule double down the right field line by Matty Brown drove in two runs. Nolen Hester followed with a single that added two runs for a 4-0 lead.
- In the third inning, The Citadel was retired in order and Wofford stranded one runner.
- After the Bulldogs went in order in the top of the fourth, the Terriers had the bases loaded after a walk, error and bunt single. Three straight outs ended the innings with all three runners stranded.
- The Bulldogs and Terriers each left a runner on base in the fifth inning and then both were retired in order in the sixth inning.
- With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Trey Yunger doubled and Jack Renwick reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt by John Dempsey scored Yunger for a 5-0 lead. Cameron Gill added a double that scored Renwick to make it a 6-0 game.
- The Bulldogs were retired in the top of the eighth and Wofford loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame on a walk, bunt single and fielding error. An infield single by Lawson Hill plated a run to make it 7-0. Two runs scored on a single through the right side by Trey Yunger for a 9-0 lead. A double play and ground out ended the eighth inning.
- A light rain began to fall in the top of the ninth and the first two batters grounded out. A close play at first base on a ball hit in the infield was ruled a hit by the umpire, the first of the game for the Bulldogs. A ground out then ended the game with the 9-0 final margin.
