CONWAY, S.C. – On a rainy Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 on a goal scored with under a minute remaining in double overtime by Coastal Carolina. With the loss, Wofford is now 1-1 on the season.
The first shot of the game was by Wofford's
Mia Bookhard seven minutes into the contest.
Rachel Rasins had a shot at the 8:45 mark that went wide right.
Maria Mon saved three shots by Coastal Carolina before being fouled in the box at 16:28 giving Wofford a free kick.
The Chanticleers had a free kick just outside the box at the 19-minute mark that was blocked by a defender. Three minutes later
Rachel Rasins had a free kick at the top of the box that was saved by the keeper. Mon added two more saves, including one that she knocked over the cross bar out of play. Wofford had two crosses into the box with under 30 seconds left in the half, but the match went to the break tied at 0-0.
In the second half, the first shot came by the Chanticleers ten minutes into play with a save by
Caroline Doss for Terriers. Coastal Carolina had a shot off the post at the 63:00 mark but was negated by an offsides call. Wofford had a chance on a loose ball in the box two minutes later but were unable to get a shot on net.
Katie Gilligan had a strong shot saved shortly thereafter as the Terrier increased the offensive attack.
With the rain picking up in intensity, both teams continued to get quality shots on goal however regulation ended with the game still scoreless. In the first overtime, the Chanticleers had a corner kick four minutes into play and had a shot go wide at the midpoint. Coastal Carolina added a corner kick with two minutes remaining, but the ball was punched away by
Caroline Doss in goal. Doss saved a shot a minute into the second overtime period. After a corner kick, a cross by Coastal Carolina was perfectly placed but the Terriers were able to clear the ball with three minutes left. The Chanticleers scored in the low left corner on a shot by Sarah Allen with 56 seconds remaining to claim the victory.
Overall, Wofford (1-1) had six shots to 24 for Coastal Carolina (1-0). Coastal Carolina had a 13 to one advantage in corner kicks.
Maria Mon had five saves in the first half, while
Caroline Doss (0-1) had six saves in the second half and overtime periods. Hope Morrow made three saves for Coastal Carolina.
The Terriers will return home on Friday, August 27 for a 7:00 p.m. contest against Radford.
