Early Goal Leads Men’s Soccer To 3-0 Win Over UNC Asheville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A goal in the first minute of play by Brandon Oddy set the tone as the Wofford men's soccer team secured a 3-0 win over UNC Asheville on Saturday night at Snyder Field. The Terriers added a goal by Mitchell Myers in the first half and Nic Parker in the second half, while Joshua Old had three saves in goal for the shutout.

Just 40 seconds into the game, Mitchell Myers found Brandon Oddy and he buried the ball into the bottom left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Wofford had the next three shots before the Bulldogs had their first shot of the match at the 16-minute mark. After a corner kick by the Terriers, the ball was cleared to the top of the box where Mitchell Myers gained possession and scored in the top right corner for a 2-0 lead at the 21-minute mark. Wofford kept up the offensive pressure and had a twelve to three lead on shots at the break.

Both tams had shots saved in the first five minutes of the second half. After a shot by the Bulldogs was high at the 52-minute mark, the Terriers had the next eight shots. Wofford extended the lead to 3-0 when Magnus Kjoller assisted Nic Parker on a shot that went into the top right corner with 78:40 on the clock. The Bulldogs had a shot save by Joshua Old with seven minutes left in the game, but they were unable to put another shot on goal before time expired.

"We have been on the other side of some early goals so we know how much of a back-breaker that can be to start a game a goal down inside of a minute," said head coach Joel Tyson. "I am proud of the guys. We talked about starting the game with juice and they did a really good job of being on the front foot from the kickoff. We were looking for a more complete performance where we were dangerous in creating chances and balancing that with sustaining possessions for long bouts."

Overall, Wofford (2-2-0) had 23shots to seven for UNC Asheville (1-4-0).  The Terriers had a four to one advantage in corner kicks. Joshua Old (2-1-0) had three saves for his second career shutout. Leon Musial (1-4-0) had five saves for the Bulldogs. Mitchell Myers and Nic Parker each had their first goals as Terriers.

The Terriers travel to Presbyterian College on Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. contest and then will host VMI on September 18 at 1 p.m. in the SoCon opener.
