SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon the Wofford women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by Winthrop at Snyder Field. Despite a commanding lead in shots, the Terriers were unable to score a goal. The Eagles had one goal in the first half and one in the second to secure the victory.
Wofford had the first shot of the match five minutes into play. Both goalies made saves on shots in the 12
th minute and the Eagles had a pair of shots in the 15
th minute. On a Winthrop corner kick at 35:51, the ball was crossed into the box and went into the bottom right of the net off of a Wofford player for a 1-0 lead. The Eagles had another chance on goal with a shot that was high after it was misplayed by the Terriers with five minutes remaining in the half. A shot by Wofford's

rd minute from outside the box hit off the cross bar.
In the second half, Wofford had a twelve to one advantage on shots. However, the one shot by the Eagles came at 48:22 when the Wofford goalie came out to play the ball and it was chipped in by Valentina Mosquera for a 2-0 lead. In a two-minute span for the Terriers,
Rachel Rasins hit the cross bar and back-to-back shots were saved. Wofford continued the offensive pressure and a free kick by
Caileen Almeida on goal was saved in the 74
th minute. Another shot by
Rachel Rasins, who had seven total shots in the match, was punched over the cross bar in the 82
nd minute. Wofford added two more shots in the final five minutes of action but were unable to score.
Overall, Wofford (2-6-0) had 17 shots to six for Winthrop (2-2-1). The Eagles had a four to three advantage in corner kicks, with all three of Wofford's coming in the second half.
Caroline Doss (0-2-0) started in goal for Wofford and had two saves.
Sophie Hefner played in the second half. Izzy Giarizzi (2-2-1) had eight saves for the Eagles, including seven in the second half.
Wofford will play at Kennesaw State on Sunday, September 19 at 3:00 p.m. in the final non-conference match of the season before beginning Southern Conference play on September 24 at Furman.
