SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams competed on Friday afternoon in the Eye Opener at the Roger Milliken Research Center Park. The women were second and the men were fourth overall in the meet.
In the women's 5K race,
Alexus Atkins was fourth overall in 19:02.0 and
Mary Claire Ridgeway was fifth at 19:06.3.
Ava Fowler was 17
th in 19:53.1,
Chloe Gilbert took 21
st in 20:10.9 and
Kimber Keene rounded out the scorers with a time of 20:22.0.
Carolyne Shealy (20:38.4),
Morgan Roberts (20:43.6),
Emma Grace Hendrickson (21:03.6),
Katharine Spence (21:47.0) and
Cate Seegars (23:02.0) also finished for the Terriers.
The men's 8K competition followed and
Beck Classey was third overall with a time of 26:08.8.
Josh Hendry was next for the Terriers at 28:12.3 for 26
th place.
Demir Degirmenci (28:34.6),
Carson Archie (28:50.5) and
Ryan O'Malley (28:53.3) completed the scorers for Wofford.
Jack Moody (29:41.5),
Patrick Daly (30:44.1) and
Cooper Reynolds (30:59.6) also completed the course for Wofford.
"It was a great opening meet for us especially coming off the COVID year," said head coach
Johnny Bomar. "We are excited to be back out here running and everyone did well. It was a big day for the women to finish second with almost all freshmen. I am excited to see what we can do in the next race."
Overall, South Carolina was first in the women's race with 28 points. The men's race was won by Augusta with 21 points. Augusta, Converse, Erskine, Johnson & Wales, King, Lander, Presbyterian, South Carolina, USC Upstate, Warren Wilson, Wofford, and Young Harris competed in the meet.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Saturday, September 18 at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational in Rock Hill.
