RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team split a pair of straight-set decisions at the Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday, as the Terriers caught the best of both worlds in seeing balanced efforts lead to Wofford's first sweep of the season over East Carolina (0-1), 25-12, 25-17, 25-19, prior to falling in three sets to a hot-handed N.C. State team (1-3) searching for its first win of the season, 17-25, 20-25, 12-25. Sophomore
Addison Foote put forward a career-best performance to pace Wofford in its win over the Pirates, while
Sarah Barham capped overall solid performances on the day leading the Terriers in their second match.

Â

Meghan Yaffa added a second-straight 10-kill performance, along with a season-high three blocks, an ace and match-best seven digs fresh off SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Â
Sophomore middle blocker
Sarah Barham was solid at the net for Wofford all match, tallying six kills in addition to a season and match-high six blocks, while junior
Kennedy Smith and senior
Kelly Hubbard recorded season-highs with six kills apiece. Additionally, Smith added five digs.
Â
Setter
Emily Hodsdon, who also comes off SoCon recognition as Setter of the Week, tallied a match-best 30 assists along with two blocks, an ace and five digs, as libero
Abbey Richman recorded five digs, four assists and an ace. Junior
Chasidy Sharpe rounds out the Terriers with two digs, an ace and assist.
Â
From the very start, the Terriers jumped out on the Pirates and made quick work of East Carolina through the first set, hitting .462 in the frame while extending double-digit leads, as blocks from
Emily Hodsdon and
Sarah Barham and an
Addison Foote kill pushed a 14-7 edge. The Terriers received balanced contributions across the board, as Hodsdon sparked a 4-0 run, with kills from Foote,
Meghan Yaffa and Barham, to bust the double-digit spread, 19-8. Yaffa came alive in adding a pair of kills, in addition to a
Kelly Hubbard kill (23-12), as she then landed an ace for set point prior to a
Kennedy Smith swing putting the set away, 25-12.
Â
The Pirates regrouped after the first-set deficit, though, Wofford continued its persistence through the opening points, as a Smith kill allowed the Terriers to nab four of the following five points, capped by a
Chasidy Sharpe ace that forced an ECU timeout at 11-6. A brief stint of errors by the Terriers allowed East Carolina to hang within four to five-point spreads before a 3-0 Pirates run made Wofford talk things over with an 18-15 lead. The Terriers came out the break with a pair of kills from Hubbard and Foote, followed by back-to-back
Meghan Yaffa and
Sarah Barham blocks that set up a 23-17 lead. Barham then took matters into her own hands, registering the final two points to grant Wofford a two-set lead, 25-17.
Â
Both squads exchanged points to begin the third, seeing the Pirates lead briefly before a pair of kills from
Kelly Hubbard subtly swung the pace in Wofford's favor with an 11-9 advantage. A bad set and
Addison Foote point subsequently forced an ECU timeout (13-9), though, kills from Foote and
Meghan Yaffa continued to boost the Wofford lead, 16-10. The Pirates wouldn't let up, claiming four of the next five points to come within three, 17-14, as Wofford retaliated with a 3-0 run on
Kennedy Smith kills and an
Abbey Richman ace for a six-point cushion at 20-14. ECU continued to compete, using Wofford errors to its advantage up until
Kelly Hubbard would connect on a pair of timely kills down the stretch to spark set point at 24-18. Foote would swing an error on the ensuing possession before answering with the winner off the dish from Hodsdon to match her career-high and secure Wofford's first sweep, 25-19.
Â
MATCH TWO | N.C. STATE (L – 17-25, 20-25, 12-25)
Â
Sarah Barham held the hot hand for the Terriers in Wofford's second match of the day, recording eight kills and a solo block to lead the way, while
Meghan Yaffa followed with four kills and five digs.
Â
Sophomore
Emily Hodsdon notched two aces, 19 assists and six digs at setter. Junior
Alexa Bertsch made her first appearance of the season for the Terriers with three kills and two digs, as
Kennedy Smith also followed with three kills and two digs.
Â
Bella Zeman and
Addison Foote finished with two kills apiece, while
Abbey Richman led the team with seven digs.
Â
The Wolfpack set the tone of the match in the first set, as N.C. State finished the match hitting .404 – the highest attack percentage allowed thus far through five matches. The trio of Jade Parchment (13 kills), Taylor Rowland (13 kills) and Melissa Evans (10 kills) were too much to handle over the duration of the match for the Terriers, as the three made up 75 percent of N.C. State's total kills.
Â
The Terriers capitalized off a plethora of Wolfpack service errors through the opening rallies, seeing
Kennedy Smith send home Wofford's first kill of the night trailing 8-6. N.C. State came out the gates on the attack, though, an early 3-0 run on a
Meghan Yaffa kill,
Emily Hodsdon ace and
Sarah Barham kill kept Wofford in arm's reach, 11-10. The Wolfpack then executed a relentless attack over the second half of the set, recording 10 of the following 13 points to take a commanding 21-13 lead.
Addison Foote and
Kennedy Smith added kills late in the set, however, N.C. State's rhythm was unfazed, coming away with the 25-17 decision in the first.
Â
Wofford hung with the Wolfpack in the second set, as kills from Smith and Hodson kept the score tied at 6-6 before N.C. State rattled off a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 edge. The Terriers struggled to find a rhythm on serve, due to the Wolfpack's consistent attack, though, another Hodsdon ace and
Addison Foote swing kept Wofford in it, trailing 15-11 by the media timeout. A sequence of errors from both teams gifted each other free points before N.C. State forced Wofford to burn its final timeout of the set after a Parchment kill at 19-15. The Wolfpack continued to excel down the stretch, while
Sarah Barham's efforts at the net kept the Terriers alive with a trio of kills, including one that held off set point. Unfortunately, N.C. State's Taylor Rowland would manage to go on and strike the winner to further the Wolfpack advantage, 25-20.
Â
The third set opened with a Wofford timeout after an early 6-1 Wolfpack run prior to Yaffa and
Alexa Bertsch getting things going for the Terriers. The Terriers then chipped away as efforts from Barham, Hodsdon and
Bella Zeman reeled in the margin to two (10-8), though, a swift 4-0 N.C. State run forced Wofford to burn its final timeout with a 14-8 deficit. A Yaffa kill and Barham solo block followed shortly after (15-10), however, with Wofford out of timeouts, N.C. State capitalized in blitzing the Terriers with an unrelenting 8-0 run that summoned a 23-10 advantage prior to an attack error putting Wofford back on serve. A Wofford service error ultimately plagued the Terriers into a set-point scenario, as N.C. State's Rowland sealed the deal on a match-clinching ace that gave the Wolfpack its first win of the season with a 25-12 outcome in the third.

Next, Wofford (2-3) travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for another ACC matchup at UNC tomorrow at noon. The match is slated to be broadcast on the ACC Digital Network+.
