CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team capped the weekend with a taste of ACC-level competition, as the Terriers fell in straight sets to undefeated North Carolina, 21-25, 18-25, 13-25, on Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. The Terriers played with grit in posing a late threat to the Tar Heels through the opening frame, though, UNC's length and athleticism would wear on Wofford over the duration of match to move its record to 5-0 on the year. The loss drops Wofford to 2-4 overall on the season.
Â
Sophomores
Sarah Barham and
Addison Foote led Wofford's attack with six kills apiece, as Foote added an ace and seven digs, while Barham added a block on the day.
Â
A plethora of Terriers finished with four kills each –
Kennedy Smith,
Meghan Yaffa,
Bella Zeman and
Emory Wyatt – as Smith landed an ace to go along with three digs. Sophomore
Emily Hodsdon tallied 22 assists, three kills and an ace to go along with three digs, while
Abbey Richman added seven digs and an assist.
Â
The Tar Heels hit .400 for the match, as UNC was able to affect the match in various ways, including its presence at the net with eight blocks.
Â
Wofford finished the match hitting .213, though, the Terriers showed signs of fight throughout the contest, particularly hitting .310 in the opening frame despite being edged.
Â
UNC opened with early leads until
Addison Foote would land a kill and ace to spark Wofford's rhythm and eventually tie things up, 10-10, upon a
Kennedy Smith kill and UNC error. The Terriers crept within one (13-12) after consecutive errors and a
Sarah Barham kill, though, a costly service error and subsequent ace by the Tar Heels pushed a three-point edge by the media timeout, 15-12. UNC used a 4-0 run to push an eight-point advantage, 22-14, though,
Bella Zeman would end the run with a kill, while
Meghan Yaffa would dial home back-to-back kills to push a Wofford 5-0 run and force a UNC timeout at 22-18. Hodsdon continued the run with an ace out of the timeout, along with kills from Foote and
Emory Wyatt (23-21), as UNC went on to hold off the late Wofford run to pull away in the first set, 25-21.
Â
The Tar Heels came out the gates clicking with a 8-2 lead on that forced Wofford to talk things over early. Kills from Barham,
Addison Foote,
Kaitlyn Brown paced Wofford's momentum creeping back within striking distance, as UNC attack errors allowed for a 10-8 deficit. UNC would quickly erase the momentum, forcing Wofford to use its second timeout after erupting a 7-2 run to lead 17-10.
Bella Zeman and Hodsdon efforts and UNC errors kept the Terriers in it, as
Kennedy Smith capitalized with a kill and ace to force a UNC timeout at 23-18. However, the Tar Heels came out regrouped, finding a kill and seeing a bad set hand them set two, 25-18.
Â
UNC continued the consistency in its attack, opening a seven-point lead through the third, 10-3. Barham and Zeman kills would pace a 3-0 Wofford run (10-6), though, a pair of Wofford attack errors would ultimately reclaim the seven-point Tar Heel edge at the media timeout, 15-8. With the Tar Heels in rhythm on serve, UNC went on to land kill after kill through the latter portion of the set, doubling the spread by Wofford's final timeout, 22-11. The Tar Heel would wrap things up swiftly out of the timeout, corralling the straight-set victory with a 25-13 decision in the third.
Â
UNC was led by Amanda Phegley with a match-high 11 kills on .786 hitting with zero errors.
Â
