SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford College women's soccer team recorded a 1-0 win at USC Upstate. The Terriers had a goal by
McKenzie Guest in the first half that proved to be the game-winner.
The Terriers had the first shot of the match when
Katie Gilligan was wide left two minutes into play. Gilligan added a shot three minutes later that was saved. Wofford had the next seven shots before the Spartans recorded their first shot at the 33-minute mark. With 34:51 on the clock,
McKenzie Guest fired a shot into the low right side of the net off an assist by
Addie Marlett to give Wofford a 1-0 advantage. The Terriers added one more shot with three minutes left in the half which was blocked. At the break, Wofford had a 12 to four advantage in shots.
In the second half, the Spartans had a chance three minutes into play. Wofford had a free kick at the 54-minute mark and once in the box the ball was put on net and went just wide to the right of the post. The Spartans countered with a pair of shots. Twenty minutes into the half, a corner kick by USC Upstate was punched away by
Caroline Doss. Another shot by the Spartans was wide left a minute later. Kelly Meara from Wofford had a shot saved at the 68-minute mark. The Spartans' Ashley Finn had a break-away that was saved by
Caroline Doss and cleared.
The offensive pressure intensified for Upstate with 15 minutes left in the match with three quality chances. Wofford added a shot by
Olivia Hughes that was saved with ten minutes remaining and two minutes later
Leanna Guion had a shot that was high. With four minutes left, a shot by the Spartans was wide and they got one more shot with under 30 seconds remaining, but it was saved to give Wofford the 1-0 victory.
"We talked a lot about our mentality and mindset to see games through and the girls did that tonight," said head coach
Emily Grant. "It was crazy and chaotic at the end. Sometimes you have to learn how to battle through and weather storms in order to get the win and I am happy that we did that. Our next game will be a really good test for us against a high-level opponent and we look forward to competing just like in all of our games."
Overall, Wofford (2-3) had 18 shots to 21 for USC Upstate (1-3-0). The Spartans had a nine to eight advantage in corner kicks.
Maria Mon (1-1-0) had two saves in the first half and
Caroline Doss made seven saves in the second half to combine for the shutout. Cora Brendle (0-2) made three saves for USC Upstate.
The Terriers face the University of Georgia on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. in Athens. The game can be seen on the SEC Network+.
