Men's Basketball Slips to Furman at Home

Furman snaps Wofford’s three-game streak over the Paladins, records first win at Wofford since 2011

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team saw its three-game win streak over the Paladins come to an end on Saturday evening, as Furman (14-7, 6-2 SoCon) picked up its first win since 2011 over the Terriers on their home court behind an insurmountable 18-of-37 performance from beyond the arc (48.6%) to pull away, 75-50, at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Wofford was unable to string together any rhythm offensively in the second half, as the loss drops the Terriers to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the Southern Conference.

"We've got to own this one, digest it and learn from it, because there was a lot of things I thought we took the bait on," said head coach Jay McAuley. "We've done that from time to time this year and it hasn't turned out well for us and this was another example of that. Starting with me, we've got to digest this and we've got to own it and we've got to learn from it."

"This won't be the last time we face adversity. This won't be the last time that a team's up five or 10 on a run and we've got to respond a lot better," added McAuley. "And I've got all the faith in the world that we will. There was pockets in the game we chose the right way and there was some we didn't, and a lot of credit goes to Furman for that."

The win for Furman marks the first over the Terriers inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium and is the first on Wofford's home court since Jan. 24, 2011.

Junior forward B.J. Mack led the Terriers as the lone double-figure scorer on the night with 14 points and nine rebounds, marking his ninth consecutive game scoring in double figures and fifth time leading Wofford in scoring over the last six games.

Heading into Saturday, Mack's 15.9 points per game ranks seventh among the SoCon, while averaging 19.0 points in league contests – good for third among the league.

Sophomore guard Morgan Safford recorded eight points, four rebounds and two assists and steals apiece, while freshman Austin Patterson connected on two 3-pointers and two free throws to finish with eight points as well. Senior Ryan Larson added seven points, five assists and a steal, while junior Isaiah Bigelow pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for his second straight double-digit rebound effort.

The Terriers were held to a season-low in scoring, shooting 37.8 percent from the field for the contest and connecting on just 5-of-15 from beyond the arc (33.3%). Wofford also finished 11-for-16 from the free-throw line (68.8%).

The Paladins finished 50 percent from the floor for the night (26-of-52), while its 48.6 percent tally on 18-of-37 shots from 3-point range would make the difference for the game. Furman finished with four in double figures in Jalen Slawon (18), Mike Bothwell (15), Marcus Foster and Alex Hunter (10).

Trailing 16-7 by the under-12 media timeout (11:45), the Terriers climbed back to knot the score at 16-16 after a brief 7-0 run in the first half. Mack hit a pair of free throws before flying in for a two-handed slam off a baseline out-of-bounds pass from Ryan Larson to come within three, 16-13. The Terriers would then get a stop on the other end, as Mack returned the favor in finding Larson for a 3-pointer to deadlock the score with 9:36 left in the half.

Free throws from Isaiah Bigelow cut the margin to two, 22-20, though, Furman's Slawson used a six-point swing with an and-one and 3-pointer to regain an eight-point cushion by the 5:24 mark, 28-22. The Paladins went on to score nine of the last 14 points to close the first half with a 37-27 advantage at the break.

Wofford was led by Mack with 12 first-half points, as the Terriers clung to a 16-6 edge on points inside the paint. Furman hit 9-of-22 from 3-point range (40.9%) in the first half, though, as the Paladins would carry the hot shooting into the second half.

The Terriers came out spirited in the opening minutes of the final frame, seeing a Mack layup prior to Larson finding Max Klesmit for a corner trey to come within seven, 39-32 (18:24). However, Furman would just get started, rattling off a trio of threes in the midst of a momentum-swinging 15-0 run that busted its first 20-point lead, 54-32, to force a Wofford timeout by the 13:09 mark.

Larson found Sam Godwin inside for a layup before corralling a steal for a step-back trey on the other end to cut into the Paladins' lead at 59-40 (8:19). Nonetheless, Furman seemed to have the answer for any ounce of resilience from the Terriers, as the Paladins' Marcus Foster responded burying back-to-back threes to push the lead to 25, 65-40, with 7:08 remaining.

From there, it would be all Furman the rest of the way, seeing the margin expand to as large as 29 points, 75-46, with 1:19 left to play prior to coming away with the 75-50 result at the end of regulation.

Furman hit 13-of-22 shots from the floor in the second half (59.1%) and was 60 percent from deep range over the final 20 minutes (9-of-15). The Paladins came away with the edge in rebounds, 28-25, while Wofford finished with a 24-14 advantage on points inside the paint.

Additionally, Furman recorded 15 points off 11 Wofford turnovers for the contest, in addition to getting a boost from its bench on 19 points to the Terriers' 14.

Wofford (12-8, 4-4 SoCon) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 26, when it travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., for a midweek tilt at Chattanooga. Tip-off is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start inside McKenzie Arena and is slated to be broadcast on ESPN+.
