Volleyball Drops Five-Set Battle to Chattanooga

Two double-doubles not enough to overcome Mocs’ 11 blocks

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team put up an incredible fight inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium Friday evening but ultimately fell in a back-and-forth battle to the Chattanooga Mocs in five sets (21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 17-25, 18-20) after leaving it all on the court. The result drops Wofford to 12-9 and 4-5 and SoCon action, while Chattanooga improves to l2-12, 6-3 in league play.

A tug-of-war of a match, both sides jostled for any edge they could find. Chattanooga hit with a little better efficiency at a .242 clip compared to the .207 mark of Wofford. But the Terriers committed 29 errors while the Mocs made only 17. But one of the biggest difference makers was the stout blocking efforts of the Mocs, who posted 11 swats while allowing only five from Wofford.

The setting duo combined for a pair of double-doubles for a second-straight match. Victoria Hensley paced the team with 31 assists while adding 13 digs for a third consecutive double-double and her fourth of the season. She's the first Terrier this season with three-straight double-doubles. Emily Hodsdon added her back-to-back double-double performance by way of 26 assists and 12 digs. It is her team-best sixth of the season and the 22nd of her career.

Bella Zeman led the offense with 18 kills, one of three Terriers in double figures. Millie Loehr and Emory Wyatt joined her with 15 and 13 kills, respectively.

Sarah Barham led the way at the net with three blocks. Hensley and Loehr each contributed a pair of aces to tie for the team lead. Loehr's aces are the first two of her career.

Abbey Richman tallied 30 digs to set a new single-match high for the Terriers this season. It's her 13th-straight match recording double-digit digs.

Wofford looked to have an advantage in the first set after a six-point run in the middle portions, but Chattanooga responded with one of its own later in the frame to pull ahead at 20-17. Wofford gave a late push, but the Mocs held firm from there to claim set one 25-21.

A Terrier five-point run early in set two was the only real stretch of comfort by either team in the frame, as the squads went blow-for-blow with one another. Despite Chattanooga's best efforts, Wofford held the lead the rest of the way, withstanding the Mocs' comeback attempts to pull the match level with Kennedy Smith's set-winning kill.

Unlike the second set, Wofford found a massive rhythm in the third with a nine-point run early to pull ahead at 13-5. The run was aided by kills from Sarah MacLean, Millie Loehr and Bella Zeman alongside Smith's ace. The hole was too deep for the Mocs, and the fell 25-15 as Wofford stood a set away from triumph.

A six-point run in set four had the Terriers ahead 12-7, but the Mocs responded later by one-upping it to post a seven-point run and claim a 17-14 lead. Feeling the momentum, Chattanooga would win seven of the final eight points to force a deciding fifth set.

Neither team wanted to give an inch in the epic fifth-set battle, which saw 13 ties and five lead changes. Sarah MacLean put down a kill late after a back-and-forth tilt to put Wofford ahead 13-12, but Chattanooga claimed back-to-back points to pull to match point. Emory Wyatt then notched a kill to even the contest, and Millie Loehr followed suit with one of her own to create Wofford's match point at 16-15. Chattanooga evened the frame before Loehr forced a third match point, but then two-straight Moc points created a fourth match point. Loehr again came up clutch to even the contest at 18 all. But Chattanooga put away a kill for a fifth total match point in the set, its third. This time, it was successful as one more kill sealed the deal and gave Chattanooga the win.

After a hard-fought battle, Wofford will turn around to give it another go tomorrow night. The Terriers host ETSU at 6:00 p.m. to conclude the weekend set.
