Volleyball Comes Up Short in Four Sets to ETSU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team gave the ETSU Buccaneers everything they had Saturday night inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, but the Bucs held on to win in four sets (28-30, 25-14, 17-25, 25-27) over the Terriers. The result drops Wofford to 12-10 overall and 4-6 in league play, while ETSU improves to 15-7 and 9-1 in SoCon action.

The Bucs held a slight advantage in aces, 7-5, but Wofford led in most other categories. The Terriers tallied more kills (58-55), blocks (12-11) and assists (53-50). Notably, Wofford out-hit ETSU .247 to .208. But ultimately the Bucs claimed the necessary three sets, two of which required extra points over 25.

Three Terriers tallied double-digit kills, led by Bella Zeman with 11. Sarah Barham and Sarah MacLean were right behind with 10 each. Barham swung at an impressive .526 mark to pace the squad with no errors on 19 attempts.

Wofford recorded five aces, spread evenly amongst five different Terriers. Emory Wyatt led the way at the net with seven blocks to tie her career high. Barham's six swats were right behind.

Victoria Hensley dished a team-leading 29 assists, and Abbey Richman led with 20 digs. This is her 14th consecutive match recording double-digit digs and leading the team in the category.

The Terriers claimed the first two points of the match, but ETSU kept pushing and remained on Wofford's heels for quite some time in that first set. A three-point run put Wofford up 17-10, and the Terriers seemed to have some breathing room before the Bucs caught a wind. A five-point run pulled them to within two points at 17-15, and then ETSU tied the set at 22. Emory Wyatt notched a kill to put Wofford back in front at 23-22, but ETSU responded, and the squads each traded points back and forth until ETSU broke the stretch. Sarah Barham's kill had Wofford up 28-27, but ETSU kept the back-and-forth battle alive to tie the affair, and then the Bucs claimed the next two points. That three-point stretch won the set for ETSU, 30-28.

Looking to respond, the Terriers opened the second set by claiming the first six points. Another seven-point run shortly thereafter had the Terriers up 15-3. The Bucs would put up a fight, but it was not enough. Wofford won the second set in commanding fashion, 25-14, to level the match.

Set three opened with ETSU in the lead, and though Wofford fought hard, the Terriers would not overcome the initial deficit. Nipping at the Bucs' heels the whole way, the Terriers stood within two points after a three-point run down 18-16. But ETSU then claimed seven of the next eight points to finish off the set and pull back in front.

Wofford held a 6-2 lead early in the fourth, needing a response to keep the match alive. A five-point run later saw the Terriers up 18-12 and setting their sights and forcing the fifth set, but the Bucs notched seven of the next 10 points to pull within two at 21-19. The pressure was on as ETSU began to feel the momentum, and the Bucs stood at match point with a 24-23 lead, but an attack error pulled the set level at 24 to force extra points once more. A kill gave ETSU its second match point, but Bella Zeman claimed one of her own to keep the fight going. However, the Bucs then won the next points to ultimately claim the match in four.

Wofford will now hit the road with four-straight road affairs. The first contest in the road swing is in Greenville on Wednesday, Oct. 26 as the Terriers battle Furman at 7:00 p.m. Wofford then travels up to North Carolina next weekend to face Western Carolina and UNCG before concluding the trip in Charleston at The Citadel the following Wednesday.
