SPARTANBURG S.C. – The No. 8 Wofford women's soccer team used an early offensive outburst to roll past No. 9 Furman 2-1 Tuesday night at Snyder Field in the Southern Conference Tournament First Round. The win moves Wofford's record to 9-7-3 and sets up a meeting with top-seeded Chattanooga in the SoCon Quarterfinals on Friday.
The Terriers struck first at the 16:16 mark, with
Megan Childress netting her first goal of the season off a pass from
Lexi Reichenbach, giving Wofford an early 1-0 lead.
Mia Bookhard quickly doubled the lead after taking advantage of a turnover in the attacking zone, allowing a one-on-one opportunity with the Paladin goalie, sending a shot over the top and into the back of the net giving Wofford a 2-0 lead just shy of the 18-miute mark.
Furman held a 5-4 advantage in shots in the first half, but the Terriers held on to their 2-0 lead at halftime.
Caroline Doss and crew took it away in the second half, fending off the Paladin attack for nearly the entire match.
Doss denied the Paladins on back-to-back shots in the 57th and 58th minutes, with the Wofford keeper winning a one-on-one battle at point-blank range, preserving the 2-0 Terrier lead.
Reichenbach looked to add another goal for the Terriers just over the 63rd minute, but her shot was denied by Nora Sampson in goal.
The Paladins were able to break through at the 84:36 mark with a goal from Helen Gutierrez off a corner kick from Ashlyn Goila.
