SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selection for SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Sept.28 to Oct. 4, with
Kennedy Smith of the Wofford volleyball team earning the recognition. The selection is made by the conference office.
Â
To qualify for recognition, the guidelines require that a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3, and the student-athlete must have completed one full year at the school.
Â
This is Smith's first-career student-athlete of the week selection, and she is the first Wofford selection this season. The senior is the first Wofford volleyball player to garner the distinction since teammate
Meghan Yaffa on Sept. 1, 2021 last season.
Â
This honor is Smith's second SoCon award of the week after being named
volleyball offensive player of the week on Monday.
Â
Smith claims both recognitions after leading the Wofford offense over all three matches last week, pacing the squad in kills in each one with a total of 41. That kill total led the team alongside her 3.73 kills per set. Her 16 kills in the first match against Furman were just one shy of her career high. The Huntersville, N.C. native added double-digit digs against Furman and Western Carolina to record back-to-back double-doubles to bring her career total up to eight. She is the only Terrier this season to record consecutive double-doubles.
Â
In the classroom, Smith touts a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a finance major.
Â
Thanks to Smith's efforts, the Terriers won all three matches last week inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The three-match winning streak after dropping the first two SoCon matches on the road moves Wofford to over .500 in league play at 3-2.
Â
The Terriers are back on their home court tonight for a match-up against The Citadel, a rematch of last season's SoCon Championship. The bout starts at 6:00 p.m. to conclude Wofford's four-match homestand.
