SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selections for volleyball players of the week with two Terriers receiving awards.
Kennedy Smith was named as the Offensive Player of the Week, and
Victoria Hensley was tabbed as Setter of the Week. The selections are made by the league office.
Â
These are the first weekly honors for the Wofford volleyball team this season. These are the first weekly selections for either player in their careers, and they each are the first Terrier to earn their respective recognitions since last season. Smith is the first Terrier to earn offensive player of the week since
Meghan Yaffa took home the award in week one last year. Hensley is the first setter to claim that distinction since teammate
Emily Hodsdon thrice earned the honor in 2021, last taking it in week 12. They are the first tandem offensive and setter selections for Wofford since that first week of last season when Yaffa and Hodsdon combined for the awards.
Â
Smith led the Wofford offense over the course of the week, pacing the team in kills in all three matches. Her 41 kills on the week topped the Terriers, as did her 3.73 kills per set. With 16 kills against Furman, Smith was just one shy of her career high. But she made up for it by posting back-to-back double-doubles against that Paladin squad and two days later against Western Carolina. She is the only Terrier this season to record consecutive double-doubles.
Â
Setting up Smith and the rest of the Terrier offense was
Victoria Hensley, who pieced together the best week yet of her young career. The freshman dished a team-leading number of assists in each match to total 122 for 11.09 per set. Her 35 assists against Furman were a career high, besting her previous mark of 28. But she did not stop there, dishing a new career-best 43 assists immediately in the next match against Western Carolina. She one-upped that number with 44 against UNCG the next day to record a new career high in three-straight matches. That 44 mark is also a new single-match high for a Terrier this season.
Â
Thanks to Smith and Hensley's efforts, Wofford returned home after dropping the first two SoCon matches on the road to rattle off three consecutive wins inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. After downing Furman in five sets on Wednesday, the Terriers dropped Western Carolina and UNCG in back-to-back sweeps over the weekend. The three-match win streak has moved the Terriers over .500 now in SoCon play to a 3-2 record, and Wofford is 11-6 overall. The Terriers have one more match this week, concluding the homestand Wednesday evening against The Citadel at 6:00 p.m.
