SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford's pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts at Russell C. King Field Tuesday night, and the bats kept rolling to deliver an 8-1 win for the Terriers over Cincinnati. Wofford's win streak extends to five with the win as the Terriers are now 11-7. Cincinnati drops to 6-9.
Â
The victory is the first for the Terriers over the Bearcats in a series that dates back to 1980, though the squads had not met since 2001. Cincinnati had won the previous 10 matchups.
Â
Dalton Rhadans (3-1) earned the win after pitching the final 3.0 innings. He totaled five punchouts and surrendered just two hits and no runs.
Matthew Marchal stayed hot as the starter, tossing 3.0 innings of hitless baseball with three strikeouts.
Coulson Buchanan was the middle arm, also hurling 3.0 innings. He fanned five while allowing just a single run and two hits.
Â
The three pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. Wofford's staff carried a combined perfect game into the fifth, but it was broken up with one out after a Bearcat hit a solo homer off of Buchanan for Cincinnati's only run. It was just about the only offense they could muster, as the Terrier arms held the Bearcats to only four hits and did not walk a single batter. Marchal has extended his streak to four consecutive outings with zero free passes.
Â
Wofford's bats fared better in the contest, tallying eight hits and drawing four walks.
John Dempsey led the way with three hits and three RBI, including a solo shot off the right field scoreboard.
Zeb Roos touts Wofford's only other RBI in the game with a hit and two runs scored. Roos also tallied two of the three Terrier stolen bases in the game, with Dempsey acquiring the other – a steal of home.
Â
The scoring began in the second inning when
Trey Yunger led the frame off with a single. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt advanced him to second, and
John Dempsey sacrificed him over to third.
Zeb Roos then singled through the left side to score Yunger for the early 1-0 lead.
Â
The contest had the makings of a pitchers' duel early, as the Bearcats settled down on the mound after that. Wofford's arms were also stout, riding a combined perfect game effort through 4.1 innings. However, that potential feat was dashed with a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning, evening the score at one apiece.
Â
Wofford utilized the long ball in the bottom of the seventh to pull back ahead for good. With one out in the inning, Dempsey launched a solo blast that careemed off the scoreboard in right field for his first long ball of the season and a Wofford lead. The inning unraveled from there for the Bearcats, as Roos was hit by a pitch to reach first, and then
Brice Martinez doubled down the left field line to provide runners on second and third. A strikeout brought Cincinnati an out away from escaping the jam, and
Ryan Galanie was intentionally walked to set up a force at all bases with the hope of making the escape process easier. However, disaster then struck for the Bearcats. A wild pitch allowed Roos to come home, and then a throwing error by the pitcher, who ran in to back-up the catcher, allowed the other two runners to score. With the round-tripper and Bearcat miscues, Wofford suddenly found itself with a 5-1 advantage after the seventh.
Â
The Terriers tacked on three more insurance runs for good measure in the bottom of the eighth. An RBI double by Dempsey to left center plated a run to start things off. A double steal granted Roos second base, but more importantly, Dempsey scurried home for a score. A second attempt at a double steal was slightly less successful, as Martinez was caught in a rundown between first and second. However, Roos crossed home plate before Martinez was tagged out, securing an 8-1 triumph for the Terriers.
Â
Wofford is scheduled to host Winthrop at Russell C. King Field tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. for the final game of the 12-game homestand. Â
