SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers won the doubles point on a tiebreaker and then won four of the six singles matches in the contest.
In doubles play,
Mark Endler and
Will Fullett picked up a 6-2 win at the #2 position. The Stags answered by winning the #3 position by a 6-3 score. At #1 doubles,
Bryce Keim and
Callum Rendle were up 6-5, but the Stags tied the match at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, the Terriers won 7-4 to claim the doubles point.
Singles action began with reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week
Mark Endler taking a 6-3, 6-4 win at the #3 position.
Robert Young then won 6-2, 7-5 at #4 singles and
Alex Horn clinched the match with a win at #5 singles. After the Stags earned a win at the #1 position,
Callum Rendle was tied at one set each at the #2 position when the match was clinched. In the third set, the Stags won 10-5 to claim the point.
Will Fullett closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the #6 singles position.
"We beat a good team today," said head coach
Rod Ray. "Prior to our match, Fairfield had won six doubles points in a row so getting that point was significant. I'm proud of how we competed both physically and mentally today. The guys really made a great effort."
Wofford (6-9, 1-1) returns to Southern Conference action on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at home against Chattanooga. The Stags are 5-6 on the season.
