SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team scored in every inning but one en route to a 21-2 run-rule triumph after seven innings Wednesday night at Russell C. King Field. Wofford improves to 36-13 with the result, and Presbyterian drops to 22-25.
Â
Carter Bailey (2-0) earned the win as the starter for Wofford. The first of eight Terriers on the mound, Bailey tossed 2.0 innings with just one hit allowed, no runs and a strikeout. Of note,
Lawson Hill, who started behind the dish for Wofford, pitched one-third of an inning in the final frame for his first-career pitching appearance. He faced two batters, walking one and striking out the next before being removed for
Mike Eggert. The punchout was the first of Hill's career, and Eggert retired the final two hitters to secure a clean outing for both Hill and himself.
Â
Presbyterian starter Clark Dearman (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in just his lone inning of work. The Blue Hose also utilized eight pitchers.
Â
The 21 runs are the most Wofford has scored in a game this season. Both squads emptied their benches, with 24 total Terriers playing and 15 different Terriers touting a plate appearance. Five posted multi-hit outings, with
Ryan Galanie and
John Dempsey leading the way with three hits apiece. Dempsey recorded an RBI and reached a fourth time by way of a walk.
Â
Galanie was the top slugger of the night, however, launching two home runs and racking up eight total RBI. The mark is two shy of the Wofford single-game record of 10 set in 1991 by Lee Amick, and it's the most since Vernon Walton drove in eight runs in 1995. Though not an overall program record, the eight RBI are the most in a game by a single player in Wofford's Division I era. Galanie's homers included a three-run bomb and a grand slam, which is just the second slam by a Terrier this season (
Jack Renwick).
Â
Three Terriers tallied two hits.
Lawson Hill extended his hitting streak to 22 games, making it the longest by a Terrier since 1999.
Trey Yunger notched three RBI with his hits, as did
Brice Martinez.
Brennen Dorighi recorded just a hit, but he also enjoyed a multi-RBI game with a pair of runs driven in.
Jack Renwick also tallied just a singular base knock, but he worked two walks to reach three times.
Â
The scoring opened quickly with a four-run first inning for Wofford.
Ryan Galanie singled home a run to start things off, and
Brennen Dorighi followed with a sacrifice fly that plated two runs.
Trey Yunger capped it off with an RBI single, making the score 4-0.
Â
The Terriers pulled away some more with
Brice Martinez driving in two on his infield single in third inning. The margin was 6-0.
Â
Wofford truly broke the game open with an eight-run fourth. Galanie launched a three-run jack to right center to begin the onslaught. Yunger added two more with his single through the left side. Martinez drove in another with a single of his own, and a second run scored on the play by way of a throwing error.
Nolen Hester brought in another with a groundout, making the score 14-0.
Â
John Dempsey launched his own long ball in the fifth, a solo shot for his 11
th of the season and a 15-0 Terrier advantage.
Â
Presbyterian finally got on the board in the sixth with a two-run home run to make the score 15-2.
Â
Just for good measure, the Terriers added six more runs in the bottom of the frame.
David Wiley singled to drive in a run, and with the bases loaded, Galanie unloaded on one to bring everyone home. His grand slam was his 13
th homer of the season and secured his second multi-homer game of the campaign.
Ben Schulte's RBI groundout ended the scoring with the margin at 21-2.
Â
Lawson Hill and
Mike Eggert combined to pitch the top of the seventh, locking down the Terrier win.
Â
Wofford returns to action this weekend and remains at Russell C. King Field to host Western Carolina. The three-game series against the Catamounts begins on Friday with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
